Have you cured yourself yet? - Rant

So, have you cured yourself yet? Be warned - this is a rant...

I was only diagnosed a month ago and I have already heard 4 times "Oh, I know someone with Crohn's! They cured themselves with some special diet. You should do that!"

It's so frustrating. Everyone seems to know someone who cured themselves with some crazy diet. One story I heard was about identical twins who both have Crohn's. I was told one was cured with his special diet while his brother is still sick because he has no self-discipline. (So I guess when I haven't cured myself it's my own fault) I was told a vegan diet if the cure. I was told no-carb diets are the cure.

There is no cure! And everyone suffers differently and have different food tolerances. At least that is what I understand. But every Joe Blow seems to want to tell me that I can cure myself. They give me that smile as if to say "Hey, thanks to me and my story about my niece's husband's brother's gardener's restrictive, miserable diet, I'm your salvation. I just cured you! Now stop your belly-aching."

Also, everyone seems to want to analyze what I eat and tell me I probably shouldn't eat it. Really? I had no idea there were so many Crohn's experts out there.

Sorry for the rant. It's just that I have only known about this for a month and I already feel overwhelmed with other people's opinions and judgements. I tried not to tell many people, but the few who know seemed to have shared it with everyone else. I need to figure out how to stop the spread of my personal life to virtual strangers, and I need to find a comeback for the "Hey, you can cure yourself" stories that will simply shut the person down.

Okay, I feel a little better getting that off my chest.

We get new posters on this forum every now and then, sometimes it's spam, sometimes it's a misguided individual who claims to have cured himself by giving himself coffee enemas or something like that. I try to see the entertainment value, but it wears a bit thin sometimes.

I cured myself!! I have to poop in a bag....but it's a miracle!!! *shakes her head at the ignorance of others*

It makes me crazy too when people say that 'oh, you've had surgery, you must be better now'. I do feel better, but I'm in no way cured!

*rant rant*

Everyones an expert rainyday.

I just smile politly and say I've tried all the cures and I'm trying the medical route now. But then again all these experts know more than the specialist doctors.

Oh, welcome to the world of poop and the forum.

Hope you get whatever information you may need here, and maybe a bit of a giggle too.

Rainy, you have come to the real world that we know it. There are experts and people who think they have all the answers. If there was a cure, chances are we wouldn't be here and it would be plastered on the news.

As others say, you just be polite and move on and you can't let it get to you, because they are ignorant of the disease. No one knows what is it like unless you have it.

I had one woman who had diverticulosis and started telling me what I should do ... I went to town on her and then she said "oh you know more than I do, I guess I better learn from you". Yeah I was polite about it but sometimes you have to just grin and bare it. You'll learn.

what? you've had Crohn's for a month and you're not better yet? :ylol2:

lol, i know what you mean, people can be infuriating sometimes, even if they do mean well. i guess you could just practice a polite smile in front of the mirror, use it when these things happen, and just say "yes doctor, thank you doctor....." :)

Get used to it. Have heard all sorts of crazy things the past 15 years. You just have to take it with a grain of salt, know they mean well, and continue to do whats best for you.

"yes Dr. Thank you Dr.":) Hilarious! I'm going to have to use that on the next layman who tries to give me advice!

Rainyday, we have all heard it before. My theory is that people hate to think that there are diseases out there that people could get that can't be cured because then-gasp-it could happen to them! People like to believe that nothing bad can happen as long as you live a good life and make the right choices and people like us remind them that sometimes bad things happen for no reason and that is a scary thought for them. They mean well, but they are misguided. If there was a cure for Crohns as easy as a specific diet, we would all do it in a heartbeat!

I feel sorry for that twin brother who is being blamed because his sister is "cured". Wait till she has a flair, and see how people react. It's frustrating.

Thank you all for your replies.

I know they mean well. I haven't yet expressed my true feelings during these conversations. I just smile and thank them for the advice. And I usually add something to the effect of "Well, it's different for everyone, so hopefully I will figure out my own diet to help keep it in remission too."

I just need to rant a little. It's only been a month for me, so I guess I was surprised by how many "experts" there are out there and now I know I'll be dealing with them for many years to come.

Also, I think it upsets me because I feel like these same people, when I don't get "cured", will think I am lazy or have no self-control. They'll think it's my own fault that I am sick. I guess I'll learn not to care soon enough.

I haven't had someone tell me I can heal myself to my face in a while. I've had Crohn's long enough to be able to tell them there is no cure at this time. When they used to tell me about different diets I would go and tell them to give me some foods that are in the diet and I'd mark off all the ones I can't eat.lol I think it's kind of funny now when people tell my I can heal myself.

Sorry you've been diagnosed with the disease but I'm glad you've found us. Welcome to the forum.

There's a lady that comes into my work (I call her Jesus-lady; not to her face) And she has a son who doesn't have Crohn's, but stomach issues and he read The Makers Diet and I should read it too because the man who wrote it cured himself of Crohn's. And I should get into touch with him, and make these really good foods for myself. Oh and i should also pray EVERYday that my crohn's is cured.

Ok lady.

I've been nice thus far, but I think next time I'll tell her I'm and atheist and a fat kid at heart and I just can't stand to listen to her drabble anymore.

I think I am about to make a leap from worrying if people understand what is wrong with me to; "People not actually knowing anything is wrong at all"

Off to go find some wood to knock on atm :D

I have discovered the ultimate cure for CD and I have tested it on myself and have decided that it is the only cure that will ever be found.

I am willing to sell this cure for the small price of $100 billion. Do I have any takers. It is so highly classified that even the scientists have no clue what is involved.

Anyone here interested? For the sum of $1 million I would be willing to let you peek at it.

for some reason Dr. Hook and Cactus juice come to mind :ylol2:

It purifies more than just the brain!

I'm telling ya, Kenny, this stuff works on joint pains, CD, dandruff, acne and has been known to work as a love potion. Well worth the small amout of money I am asking.
How many bottles would you like? Anyone else?

Yer I know what u mean. People ALWAYS want to know how my diet effects it and I DON'T KNOW! and they say I rly should find out, no I wanna deal with this my own way, I like eating what I want, and ofc If I did know then I wouldn't eat it!
And as for people u hardly know finding out, I was talking to a girl at uni who used to go to my primary school and she said her mum told her I have crohns. My family are not close to them at all and I dont know who is, so how the hell did she know? Does the whole village know? Am I the gossip? Grr! lol

I hate it when my mom says to me, "You can eat that?" I've yet to cure myself of eating foods that I enjoy. My own mother doesn't fully understand how it works.

I seem to get the opposite. 'Surely a little bit won't hurt - all things in moderation'. Sheesh, do you WANT me to get a blockage!!??

My God, we've had some cranks on here telling us how to get cured.

But some of the alternative meds do work for some people, so if you inform yourself, it might help.
That doesn't mean you should believe any crank.

I've had over 20 years of advise given to me, and my doc is the only one that has helped me personally.

I wish all I had to do was smoke a joint..... lol

Made me remember my old GI. When I first started having problems with insomnia and I asked him what to do, he asked me why I couldn't just have a couple drinks before bed. I wasn't even the legal drinking age yet. :p

Oh my goodness! Give them a slap! Not really.. but seriously! Some people are so ignorant. Luckily most people I tell don't know what it is or know someone with it but don't really know what it involves.

I think this is a great response. Brief and to the point, but nicely saying STFU. (Can I say that here?)

I too get frustrated b/c my very sweet and well-meaning mother in law blabs my business all over town. I try to remember that ultimately, everyone's heart is in the right place.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you are feeling better soon. Adjusting mentally to the diagnosis can be the hardest part - that has been my experience anyway.

You'll find lots of good advice, support and many laughs here!

I've heard just about every remedy you can think of-including my personal favorite:"If you had a baby you would feel much better."

At least they aren't telling you "Oh God, I knew someone with that and they died...."

It is all up to you on what you can and can't do. Good luck to you bro.

Last night my son told me he had the cure for CD and I told him that he should know that there isn't one. So he says "Dr Cassidy (my 3 yr old granddaughter) come here. Tell Grandpa how he can stop from being sick" She comes over and looks at me as serious as could be and says "you have to quit smoking grandpa and than you won't get sick anymore. Do you want to see me get married?" I just looked at her and couldn't think of a thing to say. Then my son reminds me that the 5 yrs that I had quit was the best years I had had in the last 24 yrs.

Well, how can I argue the point with a 3 yr old. How can I not be touched. How can I not do what she says, she is the doctor.lol For her and the rest of the grandkids and family I will quit smoking again. I will make it last so that I can hopefully be around for her. Am I a sucker or what?

If loving your family makes you a sucker, then I guess we all are!

And your grandkids are obviously crazy about you! Do it for them, and you will reap the rewards.

As a former smoker of almost 20 years, I say YOU CAN DO IT!!

Good luck - Amy

good luck Pirate! That made me think when I quit. If you want a buddy to help you or a "sponsor" I'm here for you brother. have been smoke free for almost 5 years now.

I hear this all the time.

"You will grow out of it"

"My friends brother or sister has it and he did this"

"there are these things called probiotics, or so and so" You ever try them"

I'm just sick of all the ignorance as well. Quite allergic to ignorance

my boyfriend is always going over the menu before we go out to eat. I use to think it was frustrating and embarrassing. now i think it is the sweetest thing because he cares and is always trying to make me comfortable and doesn't want to take me anywhere on a date or with friends if I'm having a flare and can't find something to eat.

Here's a good zinger I ran across on the interwebs...

Q: You don't look sick, how can you be sick?

A: In the same way that you don't look stupid.

Wow I can't believe there are people that think so stupid like that, walking on this planet! :yfaint:

Ya know guys, if you would have ate a balanced diet and less junk food as a child, you would never have gotten that disease.

Yes, I was told that today by a person that I have known a while and is a real know-it-all.

You's will be proud of my response.

Yeah, and if I wasn't designed with intestines and a gut I wouldn't need an a$$hole and you wouldn't have to spew that stupid bullcrap.

Janis took me by the arm and walked me out of there. She was proud of me though. lol
