thanks Rebecca
I had the amnio 1 week ago and I have another week to wait to find out the results. THe waiting has been the hardest part of the pregnancy so far! I really want to breast feed but realise its not the end of the world if I cant. Its really great to know that you are breast feeding too! I feel really good when I read all these positive reports! I will keep you posted as soon as I get the results from the amnio!

Yay thank you and have a great weekend

Hi Ingee,
I'm SLE patient (one of rheumatic disease) and also taking aza while pregnant (50mg twice a day). I'm almost 11 weeks pregnant and so far it's going well. Waiting for my US (nuchal translucency) in about a week (hope everything is gonna be OK with my little beany ).
I read a lot of studies (and this forum) about taking aza during pregnancy, so I'm little bit more reassured that everything is gonna end well and on term . When I told my gyno what pills I'm taking, he wasn't very satisfied, but I trust my rheuma doctor about this. I'm also planning on breastfeeding, cause I read it's OK (I don't care if my doc or gyno won't agree).

So what's with amnio? I'm from Slovenia (Europe) and here you only go to amnio if your nuchal result is bad or if you're older than 35. Good luck with resuls though .

Hi Rebecca.
I thought I would touch base again with you and give you an update. I am now 25 weeks pregnant and everything is going well. I have been thinking alot about breastfeeding recently and I am still been advised not to breast feed even though I am only taking 100mg of aza. I dont know what I should dobut I am thinking I could could formula feed throughout the night and breast feed during the day. That would ensure there is 10-12 between me taking meds and baby getting milk. Other information says that I should pump and dump my first morning milk too. Everything else has been going really well apart from the horrible heart burn and occasional flare. The ob ont give me anything for the heartburn except mylanta! Fustrating.
I wanted to see how everything is going for you an robyn? Are you both doing well. IF anyone else has any thoughts on breastfeeding I would love to hear from you also.

Cheers Ingrid

Hi. I had recently got married and my hubby and I have talked about a baby, but with having CD and being on azathioprine for the last 3 years, my ob said it's bad for pregnancy. My GI said it's okay since I've been on it already and they don't want me to stop it, as a flare up could cause me to lose the baby. I was recently on 150 Mg but just upped to 175 mg. I don't know what to do because everyone really want to try for a baby. It also doesn't help that I have PCOS. any advice on what we should do? Is aza okay to be on during pregnancy then? Please help

Can anyone that was on Imuran during their pregnancy report back on how it went? And how your baby is doing now?

I took Aza all throughout my pregnancy (175 mg daily) and also breastfed my son exclusively for 10.5 months, when he self-weaned.
I had a fabulous pregnancy, and my son is in the 95th percentile in every category. He's had one cold, and he's 17 months old. He's as healthy as can be. He started walking at 13 months, is talkative, active and super playful. A happy, healthy little boy. We're now starting to try for #2. I'm on Remicade, Lialda and Aza. I take a probiotic, B-12, D3, prenatal and fish oil daily as well.

Dear All,

I am new on this forum and I am really hopping for an answer.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's disorder a couple of months ago and right away started the treatment with Imuran and Remicade. It was out of the question to get pregnant during my treatment as I was in a flare, but mother nature had entirely something else in mind... so I conceived right after Imuran was administrated.

Is absolutely wonderful to know I am pregnant but I am also afraid that Imuran might have affected my baby during conception. Right after starting the treatment I entered in remission and blood results are getting better and better, so most probably this is the reason for my pregnancy.

My gastroenterologist tells me that there is a history with pregnant women which conceived during Imuran administration and all went well, but my GYN advises me to interrupt the pregnancy in max. 2 weeks as this drug is listed to D category with high risks for baby malformations, premature delivery, baby low weight.

I am from Romania and this disease is very little or not at all known, so there is not much room for researching. So my very hopes go with my gastroenterologist which reassured me that there are no greater risks to conceive during Imuran administration than a healthy person... that in the international registries where spontaneous pregnancies under Imuran administration are stated, there has never been reported the risk category of the drug.

As soon as I found out about my pregnancy the gastroenterologist stopped Imuran and told me to continue only with Remicade, and that there Is no reason to think about abortion.

And my question goes to all of you who did conceive under Imuran administration, please tell me if your baby developed normally during pregnancy and after delivery were there any problems?

I am really scared about this drug and don't know if it has affected my baby irremediably. My husband and me really want to keep the baby, but is this the right choice?

Please, if you can reply don't hesitate... I just want to know your opinion.

Thank you,
Teodora

Theodora, this is terrible that your gyn is saying to abort! Imuran is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding!

I'm about to try for #2 and I'm on 6MP (same as imuran) and remicade. I've been breastfeeding my 14 month old since she was born on those drugs. She's doing great.

Good luck!

Hi Teodora! I'm in the US and my GI says that the doses of immunosuppressants (Imuran, 6MP) that are used when treating IBD are fine during pregnancy. (When they are used in very large doses for other reasons they are class D).

Congratulations on your baby!

Thank you both for your replies, really gives me high hopes

I was administrated 150mg/day of Imuran... would you by any chance know what is the dose considered safe in US for conception/pregnancy? Or better yet, VioletRose, what was the dose you were administrated during the pregnancy?

Hi Teodora!

I know immunosuppressants are typically dosed for IBD based on your weight. Sorry I don't know more specifics! It's a holiday weekend in the US, so hopefully someone will be along soon with more info for you!

I'm on 6mp at 75mg which equals to 150mg of imuran. It is very safe!

My husband's GI told us Azathiopine is perfectly safe during pregnancy.. then I did my own research and even the medication packet has this information, for men not to attempt to conceive within three months of treatment.

I read a few studies, but the forum won't let me post them until I've written 10 more posts.

i know people say their kids are healthy, but this is at birth. My husband's cousin has a Crohn's disease on the same treatment and he has a son that is definitely developmentally delayed at 3 years. Much slower than he was at that age. He was also much slower with his milestones, with walking, talking, etc...

I don't know what to think except maybe stop these drugs for 6 months before trying to conceive. What's the point of having a child if you're sabotaging their chances before they're even born?

Hi guys. My story is almost the same as Teodora said. I'm from Romania/ Bucurest and i just found out last saturday that i'm pregnant. Last month i discussed with my gastroenterologist that i want a baby and she told me to quit imuran and wait like 3 monts before i get pregnant. It happend for my baby not to wait that long. I already spoke with a generalist doctor and he said that the best thing i can do is to make an abortion. i have an appointment with my gynecologist next week and with my Gi. I'm so scared about the effects of imuran on my unborn child but all of you and your comments give me strenght and faith that noting bad is not going to happend.

Teodora, what you decided about your pregnancy?

Hello. Sorry for the delays in responding. Cristina I hope that is not too late for you... after long discussions with several specialists and research on the other forums I've decided to continue the pregnancy.
Like you, I was very scared, but now, on 34 weeks of pregnancy I know that I took the best decision. The baby is totally fine, he has no morphological problems. I hardly wait to meet him .
Unfortunately in our country there is no experience with such medication in pregnancy, and many specialists are not informed with this. As my GI specialist said, azathioprine is considered in category D because of dosage used in other diagnoses (as rheumatology), but not in Crohn disease.
I hope my response will help you. If you consider that I can help with any advice as the specialists who helped me, please send me a private message. I'll give you my e-mail address.
Good luck!

Hy guys!
I am here to give you the good news about us. I have a baby boy very healthy. He is already 3 months old .
I also, I'm feeling good. I am in remission since first trimester of pregnancy but I continued with Remicade till S26 of pregnancy.
Till then I don't take any medication for Crohn. I hope to remain like this for long.

Early in pregnancy it was very scary for me but your posts gave me hope and faith that my baby will be fine. Thank you all for your stories!!

Hello teodora,

I am glad you and the baby are doing well, but I have a question, for how long did you take azathioprine while pregnant? And if anyone could tell me if they have been on both salofalk and azathioprine while pregnant please? And how is the pregnancy outcome?

I think folic acid is good, do not do side effect to your body when you're pregnant
