Planning pregnancy and azathioprine

Greetings everyone!

My name is Mike, I've had Crohn's for 8years now. I've had surgery to remove a part of my intestines in 2009, used azathioprine for a couple months before losing my insurance and discontinuing. Now I'm married, have insurance, and have been actively trying to get my wife pregnant. Now my gi wants me to start up azathioprine again at 250mg a day, is this safe for us while trying to get pregnant ?

Also is occasional light drinking ok while on azathioprine?

Any advice on top of all the reading would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

I'm on remicade and azathioprine.. My dr said it was fine for me to get pregnant and remain on those meds (im a girl btw) So i would think if I can be on it the entire time I'm pregnant that it should be fine for a guy. Also as long as your liver enzymes are fine and stuff I wouldn't see why a few drinks here and there would hurt.

Hey Jaime! I saw you're in remicade. I am too. Has a doctor ever mentioned remicade harming implantation? Or Crohn's harming egg quality/quantity? My fertility specialist mentioned both of those to me and I had NEVER heard that...and I've had Crohn's since 8th grade! Any insight would help. Thanks!

I had a healthy boy in 2014 and I was on remicade the entire time. He's very healthy and happy. When I went to mayo clinic they said remicade hasn't shown a higher chance for birth defects. Mayo in MN were the ones that told me to stay on remicade and aza if I wanted to get pregnant again bc even with the combination of the 2 there was maybe a 2% higher chance to have complications with my pregnancy. I have heard that it's harder to get pregnant if you have crohns and it's not fully in check, however if you're in remission it should be pretty normal.
