Ketogenic Diet

Hey guys,
I'm sure there is a area on this forum about this already but i couldn't find it. (Let m know if you do.)
Have any of you done the Keto Diet? What was your experience like and what tips or tricks do you have for me as I start? Did you symptoms get better?Worse? Or just change a little?
This past year I lost my father in February of 2015 and have gained a lot of weight I think just from emotional eating. Anytime I felt stressed or sad or upset, my fiancé and I would get super unhealthy take out and just mow down as much food as we could.
He had the idea to try this Keto Diet and i'm glad we are doing it together. As a Crohnie i'm a little nervous to what it might do to me.

Any advice would be great!
Thanks! :sign0085:

While there is much evidence that ketogenic diets are safe and effective for the general population, anyone with digestive issues would want to be cautious.
Ketogenic diets are very low carb and moderately low protien, but generally pay no attention to food quality.
You might want to consider a medium to low carb paleo diet. A paleo diet would emphasise food quality and appropriateness, rather than fat content. With this you would cycle in and out of ketosis rather than trying to stay there all the time

There may be a benefit to severely restricting carbs for a while to starve out bacterial imbalance but i feel much better for adding carbs back to my diet. Having said that paleo is generally low carb compared to the SAD diet, around 100g of carbs a day

google it but the difference is
"On a low-carb diet, the goal is exactly that: to minimize carbs, usually for the purpose of weight loss (although sometimes it’s for other reasons – for example, people who try a ketogenic diet to control epilepsy). On a Paleo diet, the goal is to make appropriate nutritional choices considering your evolutionary history.
You can eat a healthy low-carb diet or a junk food low-carb diet. You can eat a low-carb or a moderate-carb or even a high-carb version of Paleo. There’s a lot of overlap, because Paleo tends to be lower in carbs than a typical American diet, but they’re not even close to the same thing.

Thanks for all your info. So far so good.I started it a few days ago and the only issue i'm having is constipation. I can't tell if it's from an increase in fiber or if i'm not eating as much fiber as I did before( I never bothered to track what I ate before now).
Anyone doing this diet know what I can eat (or not eat) to help with the constipation?

Thanks!!

Constipation and Ketogenic Diets
http://www.diagnosisdiet.com/ketosis-and-constipation/
summary.....
"In order to eat a ketogenic diet, which is a high-fat, limited protein, ultra-low-carb diet, most people find themselves turning to high amounts of foods that are notoriously difficult to digest, including nuts, low-starch vegetables such as crucifers, and full-fat dairy products"

A Ketogenic Diet, the Short Version
"Carbohydrate restriction can cause constipation, so be sure to include these foods in your ketogenic diet.

Leafy greens will be your primary vegetable, either in cold salads or cooked alone or in soups or stir-fries.
Garlic and onions are good sources of sulfur and feed gut bacteria.
Fermented greens (sauerkraut) should be consumed regularly.
Small amounts of very low sugar vegetables (radishes, celery, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc.) can usually be tolerated without interrupting ketosis."

I would DEFINITELY recommend adding fermented vegetable (real sauerkraut, not the sterile vinegar rubbish from the supermarket)

Just a little something to think about,
Some people do really well on ketogenic diets, some don't......
but often when a diet is radically changed some people feel great possibly due to something being added or something being excluded, and they think "wow, this is the diet for me" and then after a few months/years they stop feeling so good (probably because the deficiency or deficiencies start to express themselves, but often they think that the diet made them feel great before so they have to go harder and be stricter to get the same results.
So while you are on this diet i would recommend reading up on ancestral nutrition and see where it differs from ketogenic

Best of luck

Great info once again! I've gotten better at "going" now. Granted it is WAY less than before (i'm not eating as much) I believe I wasn't drinking enough water and my body didn't know what was happening. I am a little more adapted now, it's been seven days in total. Weighed myself and i've lost 4 pounds, most of which i'm sure is water weight but i'll take it! :)
I have noticed that my stool is VERY green now. Not soft or hard but just green. I've been reading that it means the foods i'm eating are going in and right out so to speak nutritionally. I am going to have to do a little more research on this because I don't know what is causing it(what foods that is). I have started to eat more spinach and some say that could just be it, but knowing my body it's been green before without having green salads. So i'm missing a key component somewhere. Whats strange to me is that I'm not weak, or tired or foggy during the day. I feel great! I'm going to perhaps go the sauerkraut route and maybe some low carb/sugar yogurt to get some of my guts back in order. I think that might help the green?
Another thing i've noticed (sorry if all this is TMI but if anyone understands it's you guys <3) the level of blood in my stool has gone from 20% to about 0%! That is for obvious reasons a HUGE plus.
Just wanted to update you guys and I hope this helps anyone who is thinking of doing the Keto diet. I think when I go to my yearly gastro appointment i'm going to discuss supplements with him and some options that i can consider for the nutrition.
Thanks all! :dance::pika:

kms0387,

I have been considering the keto diet as well. As you are more than a year ahead of me in that process, I was wondering what your thoughts are. Did it work for weight loss and control your symptoms?

Ketogenic diets have there place but there are issues that need to be thought through

This thread covers a lot of the details...

My advice.....
There are much better diets for Crohn's than ketogenic.
If you are determined to try it listen to this podcast,

"Ketogenic diets have been the source of a lot of controversy, and for good reason — it’s easy to implement one badly and damage your health; but they can give hope when nothing else seems to work. If you’re interested in ketogenic diets, don’t miss Eileen’s interview of Terry and me!"

My understanding is that a period on a ketogenic diet will reduce intestinal microbial activity, which will lead to an improvement in symptoms but then after a while there will not be enough glucose to maintain a healthy amount of mucus lining the intestines....
My interpretaion of what i have read.....
Go ketogenic (max 30-40 gms of carbs a day) for up to a month, then reintroduce carbs up to about 75-100gms a day of SAFE STARCHES[1] only, and perhaps cycle in and out of ketosis by having medium/low carb days and some very low carb/ketogenic days.
Food Quality is much more important

[1] "The term safe starch was introduced by Paul and Shou-Ching Jaminet in their book,Perfect Health Diet, and refers to any starchy food that (after being properly cooked and prepared!) is low in fructose and relatively free from natural toxins (like lectins, saponins, and gluten and related proteins)"
