Work Issues

Hi Everyone,

With everything i've got going on atm with my Crohn's i've also started facing a lot of difficulty with personal issues. I started a new job in april, and have been off sick since may. My work place are threatening to fire me. I have a formal meeting on Tuesday to discuss my future. I've sent them my sick notes etc...and even a letter confirming that i have Crohn's disease, however it still looks likely that i'm going to be dismissed because i'm still on probation.

I've had a look online and it does look as if Crohn's is protected under the disability discrimination act, however i'm unsure of whether this means that i'm protected even though i'm currently on a probation period?

Has anyone had any experience with this before? I'd like to write a letter to my work place without sounding to harsh, however I need to make sure my information is correct.

Regards,
Will

Hi Will

So sorry to hear this. I would highly recommend calling ACAS and speaking to one of their advisors. It's a free service and they are specialists in employment law. I called them last year over a similar issue and they were great. Also speak to your union rep if you are in one.

Best of luck, let us know how you get on!

Hey!

Thanks! I'll definitely give them a call tomorrow. The whole thing is adding unnecessary stress. FFS, i knew more personal things would catch up to me at one point.

Hi Will,

I remember being told that they wouldn't have given me the job if they'd known I had Crohn's. It was a fairly breaking moment for me and has made me cautious about who I tell about my Ileostomy.

I'd recommend the Citizens Advice Bureau for some high quality advice. They have people who specialise in Employment Rights.

The thing that I would consider is are they able to properly support you during a future flare-up given their current stance.

All the best.

Tom

Hi everyone, thank you so much for all the advice but unfortunately i've been fired. My contract was literally just terminated because of 'ill health' As if i didn't feel like shit already lol.

Oh no :-(

So sorry, but on to bigger and better things once you've worked on your health x

Thanks, you're right though. I've been thinking about it, and I'm just looking forward to going into remission for a while (if all goes well with my surgery lol.) and feeling somewhat normal again. So at least i have that to look forward to. x

that's such a shame! This disease has many up and down, i'm sure and hope you'll feel better soon and find a much better place to work.

I know it's not the outcome anyone would want, but at least you won't have the worry and stress hanging over you now. Let us know how you are!
