Energy Drink Euphoria

Every once in a while, I'll drink a sugar free Rockstar or Monster energy drink when I'm dragging at work or have a big night out with friends. I understand they are terrible for you in general, but I feel amazing for at least 5 or 6 hours after drinking one. I'm much more outgoing, my brain works quicker and have a general sense of well being. I don't get anywhere near this effect from any other drink with caffeine or caffeine pills alone. I've been trying to isolate what ingredient gives me this feeling. Glucose? Taurine? Ingredients working synergistically together?

Does anyone have any insight or similar experience with sugar free energy drinks?

i deeeefinitely know what you are talking about and run a low-grade addiction to energy drinks myself at various periods of stress/indulgence. Do you feel that these drinks have any effect on your Crohn's? I've never tried to 'quit' it, but I feel that caffeine can be a major aggressor for the intestines, and I have heard from 1 GE that fake sugars are bad for Crohn's.

I know for me that caffeine aggravates my Crohns.

Caffeine alone doesn't seem to irritate my system. Sugar is a major irritant, so I only buy sugar free energy drinks. I typically take caffeine pills to get energy, but a sugar free energy drink gets me going like nothing else. If I drink two energy drinks in one day, I tend to get the runs, but am fine with one.

I'm a bit of caffeine freak myself.
According to this: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15313438

It might actually be good for us! :)

Sugars, real or no, are supposed to be pro inflammatory and pro bad bacteria though, so maybe y'all are on to something with the sugarless drinks. I would use those too, but I can't get past the taste.

If you want to heal your Crohn's from the inside out once and for all, do away with the energy drinks. You need to flood your body with natural ingredients from a ton of cooked vegetables. Work on getting a lasting energy from a good night's rest, the right diet, the right supplement stack.

"Caffeine. Caffeine is a mild but harmful stimulant. Stimulants whip the adrenal glands into action. This eventually weakens the adrenals and perhaps the thyroid gland, and this leads to more depletion of a person’s energy. In large enough amounts, or with chronic use, caffeine from any source is associated with anxiety, irritability, tremors, dehydration, and rebound fatigue and exhaustion." http://drlwilson.com/ARTICLES/COFFEE.htm

"A diet low in protein can cause fatigue, as can a diet with sugar or sweets that upset the blood sugar level.

To have good energy one must also have enough B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, and perhaps other vitamins and minerals. I do not understand how some people function on their refined food diets. Many turn to stimulants such as cola drinks with caffeine just to function.

Eating a diet of whole foods, animal protein daily, lots of cooked vegetables, avoiding vegetarian and vegan diets, and having good eating habits such as not drinking with meals is a very good start toward restoring one’s energy." http://drlwilson.com/articles/energy.htm

Though I generally agree with that regarding diet, it sounds like you are describing adrenal fatigue, which as far as I know has no basis in science. The adrenals don't get depleted of anything, though I suppose it is possible that the brain may develop tolerance to cortisol, which could cause those symptoms. Takes a lot of chronic caffeine use to get there, though everyone tolerates it differently.

Glucose is your body's natural sugar, which will give you a short burst of energy followed by an insulin crash. Taurine is a chemical involved in basic metabolic processes that occurs naturally in the body; as far as I'm aware there is no proven effect in consuming more of it. Finally, guarana is a but that simple has a lot of caffeine in it.
