Alcohol

Hi all I am very lucky that I have at the moment mild Crohn's and don't seem to have any specific food triggers apart from chilies but I'm finding drinking alcohol 1 hits me a lot quicker than it used to and I'm uncomfortable for days after does anyone else suffer this I'm only 25 and all my friends enjoy a good drink I have been tee total on and off for a year but as much as I hate to admit it its not as much fun going out now any suggestions of drinks you find tolerable would be greatly appreciated.

Alcohol tolerance depends upon each person, some find they can tolerate it completely, some find they can only tolerate small amounts every few weeks, some none at all. I haven't touched alcohol since last August since it gave me horrible cramps and I haven't tried it since. I went through Uni freshers without drinking, so trust me I know how hard it can be, especially since I was in a new place trying to fit in and make friends. Your friends should be understanding though, and if they aren't well sorry they aren't very good friends. Perhaps you could socialise in other ways than just going to pubs and clubs? Me and my friends often go for meals rather than just going out to drink, and since I'm gluten free as well they let me pick. Life can be just as fun without alcohol, you just have to think outside the box.

I do understand that, maybe when things are better you will be able to tolerate alcohol, but for now please take care, your health is the most important thing.

Hi Shorty, I'm in the same boat as you my friends all have a heavy drinking culture, and it's really not that much fun to go out without being able to drink. Very annoying when a random person asks you why your not drinking and you have to go through your life story or lie to them. I took up smoking weed as it's somewhat of a substitute and managed to get a lot of my friends smoking weed by just always having weed around.

The alcohol to try would be a smooth vodka, but my guess is it's the actual alcohol that bugs most crohn's patients.

I've found it very much depends on the drink as to how it effects my Crohns, beer is the worst while I find I am fine on whiskey. Wine is also a no go for me but I'm very tolerant of clear spirits and cider.

I find the key to Crohns is moderation in everything you do. You can still enjoy your nights out just try to throw a few soft drinks in the mix. Try not to make a big deal out of not keeping up with your mates, eventually they'll be so drunk they don't care who's had how many pints anyway!

Vodka pineapple n cranberry juice, girls drink but damn tasty and pretty light on the stomach, my cd is in the large intestine though, pretty sure most booze gets absorbed in the small intestine

If I am flaring alcohol is a huge no-no for me, but when I am in remission I love a few cocktails on the weekends. Beer has always upset my stomach more readily than wine or mixed drinks. In general, I find alternating a drink with a large glass of water helps me feel best the next morning.

I have a friend who swears by whiskey and ginger ale for stomach aches and he used to try to convince me it would help when I was having Crohn's discomfort as well, haha.

It depends on each person.
I enjoy the adult beverage.
