How long did it take for your D to subside with SCD? When did you introduce new foods?

Hello all,

So I just had a seton placement procedure today and am currently 18 days into the SCD diet. I did the intro diet for 5 days and noticed my bowel movements actually became less solid. I was only eating burgers, chicken soup, and the homemade jello. Somewhere around day 4 I read that it was possible the grape juice in the jello was contributing to the D so I eliminated it. Since then my diet has consisted of chicken soup, burgers, steak (twice), pork chops, and puréed carrots...lots of puréed carrots.

My bowel movements became less watery after eliminating the jello, but I still haven't had that perfect log that I read some people start having just days into the diet (I realize these are probably exceptions to the rule, but I'm still jealous). Most days I probably have 5s or 6s on the Bristol stool chart. There were two instances that could probably be classified as a 4.5, but I'm hesitant to add more foods to my diet until I get those regularly. My last BM this morning was one of those instances so fingers crossed it turns into a trend as I would love to start trying eggs and homemade applesauce soon. There are some very ripe bananas in my kitchen so I may start experimenting with those regardless.

Also to note, despite having crohns, I've been lucky to not be one of those people that uses the bathroom 10+ times a day. I probably average 3 trips a day, once when I wake up, once in the afternoon, and again sometime in the evening. But the past week I've been going about once a day. One day I didn't go at all. I'm not sure if that's a sign of improvement or I've shifted more to the constipation side of this disease. On the bright side, stomach pain has reduced dramatically the past week and I haven't dry heaved in a few weeks (I used to have dry heaves daily after some meals).

So I ask you, how long did it take your D to improve after starting SCD? And should I start slowly introducing new foods eve though I'm not getting consistent 4s and 5s on the Bristol stool chart?

Hi, I'm not an expert on SCD, but I am on it now. I would suggest SLOWLY introducing foods. The pecanbread website has some good info about stages of food introduction. Hope that helps!

Hello,

When I was on the SCD Intro I had a similar situation as you. I was eating scrambled eggs, beef patties, carrots, squashes, and chicken soup. Though the intestinal pain subsided almost immediately, my bm's did not ever really become solid until I added avocados and cauliflower to my diet. I think this is because they added some bulk or ruffage to the intestines to slow everything down. I would mash a ripe avocado into my chicken soup, and make mashed cauliflower like here:

(minus the garlic).

Again, ease yourself in and do what you can. You should probably be okay eating ripe bananas (with brown spots on them). Don't make a recipe like pumpkin pancakes just because it was listed on a paleo blog; a lot of the ingredients that go into something like that like arrow root fibers, nut flours, etc, can be hard on a tummy.

Hello all,

-Some people seem to respond instantly,
-Some slowly, and
-Others have issues with SCD legal foods (like eggs, yougurt, nuts, sugar, and beef) so they will never stop the D at this stage of the diet.

It's too early to know if you have a problem with any of the 'legal' foods so continue adding the 'legal' foods (- I would only add SCD and paleo 'legal' foods) to SCDs instruction and timetable.
Do NOT take a large dose of probiotics.

The egg is there because (if it is well digested) it is good protein and healthy fats,
The yougurt is there because (if it is well digested[1]) it is a probiotic along with good fats and proteins .

In my humble opinion you may improve once other foods are introduced and testing on 'potentially problematic foods' can be done ,
-The standard Paleo test to see if it is tolerated would be to eliminate all non-paleo 'foods' and live on what is tolerated (and paleo and SCD) for 30 days[2].

-If other probiotics[3] can be introduced - check with the SCD websites and introduce slowly. Ellaine had words to say on bifidus bacteria[4]

-Meat and fat from fish, chicken, and red meat – don't forget the organ meat (with no processed or deep fried or fast food or “mystery meat[5]”), would replace eggs.Homecooked without seed oils too?......

SCD seems to work right out of the box for between 20 to 70% people depending on who's estimate you take,
- the rest of us, well, don't panic, take it easy, and then we have to work it out[6]

[2] There is a big gap between low-carb paleo (very like SCD), and medium-carb paleo which recommends carbs from tubers and other non-grain sources. Keep with the SCD version and consider adding (paleo) carbs to your diet at a (much) later date?
