Hello - 28 years with crohn's

hello - 28 years with crohn's

glad to be aboard. i have had crohn's for 28 years now and i'm 45. no surgeries, no symptoms for years, no medication.

when i had first flare-up at 17, i lost about 30 pounds and almost flunked grade 12 i missed so much school. was finally referred to a specialist, diagnosed and put on prednisone.

for the next 25 years i would go about 3 years, sometimes 5 between flareups. i always needed pred. to recover. i began running to control stress levels.

about 3-4 years ago my wife asked me to try the activia yogurt. it cleared up my the mild flare-up i was having at the time and i continued on for a couple years with it. my doctor was sceptical about my story.

after that, i started looking at my diet, did some research and started cutting back on sugar and refined foods. i still indulge, but i eat much more fruit and vegetables, fish and nuts than i used to. no more activia needed.

now i am taking 1000mg of fish oil supplements daily and feel great.

i feel i am managing my disease well and i would urge others to look at what they are eating and consider making healthy changes. changing your diet is very difficult (it took me a couple years) but it has paid off. doctors can't believe how i look and feel without drugs.

Joe,

Welcome to the forum! Glad to hear you are managing well.

I am just starting a krill oil regiment, 1000 MG's a day. I'm hoping to see if it improves my patience and short temper which comes and goes but it really bad when I flare. I'm also hoping it helps my memory.

Anyway good meeting you here, this is great forum because of all the people here.

Welcome Joe, I envy that your disease in a mild stage. I have done everything from a to z gave up alot and spent alot on alternatives , you name it...done it. Everyone is different in this crappy disease, so we just do the trial and error thing until a cure comes along... I use probiotics, some Gis agree it is a good thing but even 900 billion that I take doesnt do it all.

Nutrition is important, and we all have to avoid certain things. Glad you are here and doing well.

Hi Joe and welcome!

So glad you are feeling good and able to manage your disease with diet. Regardless of whether or not we can control our Crohn's with diet and food, we could all benefit from a good, long look at our diets and make some improvements.

I rarely eat processed food or refined sugars - it certainly hasn't cleared up my Crohn's but it has helped me feel good about what's going into my body and really helped me control weight gain during the year I have been on pred.

Hope you continue to be well and we hope to see you around the different threads - Amy

Hi Joe and welcome!! When my son was dxed, I had the same thoughts about diet and we have certainly altered his diet as well as our whole family's. He's been doing well since early this year so I see no reason to not keep at it. Hope you remain in remission. Good luck!!!

Hi, and welcome to the forum! I had a very healthy, natural, made-from-scratch diet before Crohn's and have been working to find new ways to meet those same needs now, despite limitations in what I can eat. Process, process.

Hi Joe
and welcome

that is encouraging and a lesson to us all!
It makes sense, eat like crap and you will feel crap!
but.. a different story when you've got serious inflammation, then we've gotta resort to Pred again!
hope you stay well and good luck!
lotsa luv
