Vasovagal episode during bowel cleanout and mucus question

Hi Ladies,

My daughter was taken by ambulance this morning after what appears to be a vasovagal episode (low blood pressure). This happened about an hour and a half after her first dose of oral dulcolax, and about 10 minutes after a bowel movement. She was nauseous, and couldn't keep her eyes open. Very scary.

Is this a typical reaction to a clean out? It's our first one in preparation for a colonoscopy on Tuesday.

Also, she had a normal bowel movement this morning, 1 episode of diarrhea followed by one movement of nothing but mucus globs. A LOT of mucus globs. Is this normal during a clean out? She had 1 episode of diarrhea late this afternoon and it had a small amount of blood in it. Is this typical after one dose?

I plan on calling her GI tomorrow, but can't sleep with all these questions....

Thanks in advance.

The prep always makes me nauseous, but the blood pressure incident doesn't sound normal.

Hi Mama, I can't imagine her prep lasting for 2 days. EJ just had one last week and his prep started 24 hrs in advance. EJ ended with the mucous but it does sound odd that she'd start having nothing left but mucous after only two bowel movements. Has she been able to eat anything in the last couple of days?

Yeah, I wondered that too. I told them she wasn't constipated so it made no sense to clean her out and keep feeding her....and oral dulcolax is not recommended for children under 4....and she's the size of a large 2 year old. My husband doesn't even want to go through with it now because he doesn't trust the GI....whom we've never met. They scheduled the consult and colonoscopy on the same day.

She's been eating just fine. I thought it was weird that we saw poo, mucus, poo. I mean, there was ZERO stool with the second bm, only globs and globs of fluffy white stuff. Very strange.

But it's not unheard of to have mucus, so I'm going to try not to worry too much. The whole thing is just very unnerving.

Thank you very much for your quick responses. I have read EJ's scope update and am so glad things went well. (((HUGS)))

I don't know about fluffy white stuff. EJ's mucous is mostly clear. Is she currently on any meds?

Well, the bloody mucus she was passing that earned her the scope was clear yellow jelly (sorry, gross, I know), but today it was white. No meds, just a chewable multivitamin.

She's had 2 vasovagal episodes in the past, but not as bad as today, so while the stimulant made this one worse, she's obviously dealing with the GI discomfort in a very scary way. I'm afraid of what they are going to find on the scope

Is it a tablet? The problem with preparations like Dulcolax is they draw fluid from the body into the bowel to work. I would imagine with a child of your daughters size it wouldn't take too much of a shift in fluid load to cause her blood pressure to fall significantly. If the docs insist on using this type of prep then I would suggest to them that in future it be given in hospital where an IV can be used to counteract the effect.

Thinking of you,
Dusty

Dusty, thank you (((HUGS))) We definitely will NOT be doing this again at home...and hopefully she won't need anymore scopes. She's not yet diagnosed, this scope in for investigation. I don't know how y'all do it....well, I do....you're mommies and grandmommies.....but it's very stressful not having a well child.

How scary - bless your heart! Hey, Claire's mucous is always white and fluffy. Not sure if that is comforting at all but when she does have it, that's exactly what it looks like.

We'll be thinking of you all - let us know how she's doing!

Hugs,

Thanks for thinking of us. Her scope looked fine, so we are very relieved at this point. It will take 2 to 3 weeks for biopsy results. He said the bloody mucus could have been a polyp that sloughed off. He said not to worry about mucus, which I find strange because everything I have read says that visible large amounts of mucus are not normal. He said unless we see bloody mucus on a regular basis, not to worry about it. He said bloating is also nothing to worry about. It could mean her gut is slow, or it could be something she is eating. We still have no idea about her vasovagal episodes, but we're seeing a pediatrician in March.

I'm very glad it is not IBD, but we are still in the dark as far as her FTT, bloating and low blood pressure spells. But, its a few more things that have been ruled out. He said she *looks* like a Celiac child, but her panels are always negative, and she was biopsied when she was 14 months during an endoscopy. So, we are going to trial her on a GF diet and see if that helps.

I really want to extend a very sincere thank you to all of you for allowing me into your community for a brief period of time to help with some of my questions. I wish all of your sweet children very long-lived remissions and a healthy and bright future for them all (((HUGS)))

I second all that Mark said. Thanks for letting us know. I hope you find answers soon! And so glad that it wasn't IBD. I hope she feels good and maybe the diet will do the trick!
