Help please! Are my symptoms IBD?

Hey all. I've been reading these forums for a while, trying to figure out what exactly to do. I'd really love opinions, so if you can bear with me while I explain what's going on, I'd be really appreciative.

Okay, so I've had problems with bad diarrhea for 15 months now. I've lost a total of 30 kilo's in this year without exercise or too much dramatic diet change. My doctor has tracked that I've lost 10 kilo's in the past two months alone, which has tied in with worsening symptoms.

Once, I passed mucus and blood. And this week, for three days I had black looking stools, oily and foul smelling. Throughout this all, I've had shocking persistent diarrhea but otherwise, have not noticed blood (on a few occasions, there was maybe slight blood but hardly noticable). My black stools cleared up and now it's back to dark stools, foul. Going to the toilet usually doesn't make me feel any better, it's a constant feeling of needing to go. Usually I get cold or hot flushes, nausea when a bowel motion is imminent, haha.

I have had extreme abdominal discomfort, alot of swishing noises - like water going through my intestines, I've had what feels like menstrual cramping down low, on occasion. If I push at my tummy, most times it's extremely tender. This started on the left side and is now also under my ribs, and along my right side. I've had bouts of extreme nausea, where I've had my head over the toilet bowl for hours - nothing fixes the nausea. I've had alot of headaches lately, and am starting to have really bad eye pain and aching. I'm extremely weak and everything feels like it's hurting. I have this all day, and often go to bed early because I'm sick of dealing with it. My hands and wrist (usually joints) ache, ankles and my back hurts immensely some days. Some days, I can hardly handle the neck pain I have.

My problem is this. I'm in the middle of organising endoscopy/colonoscopy but I'm just wondering whether what I have sounds more like IBD or IBS. I thought I'd ask people who actually suffer with IBD! My doctor seems to believe it's some form of IBD due to blood in stool on occasion and the recent black stools. But then I have periods where my stools aren't black and they don't have blood, usually this is the case more often than not? Where it seems alot more IBS than IBD?

From your experience, how much of what I'm experiencing ties in with IBD?

I don't know if I ever have a fever as I don't have a thermometer. But I don't FEEL as if I do when these 'attacks' occur. Can you have IBD without fever?

I'm just trying to get as much info as possible so I'm prepared for either outcome, and am very anxious about the scopes. My doctor wanted me to go to E.R to get them done urgently, but I keep overthinking and wondering whether the stools weren't really black! Maybe I ate something to make them black (but I hadn't.) ...

I'm sorry if this doesn't make much sense, I'm in a bit of a state. I know I just need to get the scopes done and work with the doctors, which I am doing. Just wondering how urgent I should be, as if it's more likely to be IBS, I don't want to have to cancel work, arrange babysitting, etc etc in a hurry!

So much thanks in advance for anything anyone has to offer towards this all.

(sorry it was so long)

get the scope asap. all of these symptoms are symptoms of IBD and you might need treatment. if you can get your hands on some probiotics it might at least help with the diarhhea situation. Lactobacillus Acidophilus is what you want.

Thanks so much I've heard probiotics are useful and will get some this afternoon.

Because this has all started getting worse so suddenly, I'm kind of floundering around trying to find things that work. I'm trying Aloe Vera juice or something at the moment? I'm also finding that most foods are upsetting me now. I cut out lactose last year as I started getting violently ill when I ate/drank it. And then caffeine was upsetting me. Then softdrink. Fatty foods. Gah, the list goes on. I had peanut butter toast this morning and have been in agony since. This all got even worse since I had a glass of wine the other night, I'd already had a rough day and a friend was up from down south so I had a glass of wine with her and boy, did I pay for that the next day.

And now I'm started to get reflux? I don't get heartburn as such, but stabbing pains in left side of chest and extreme discomfort under ribs and bring up acidic stuff. Sigh. I don't even know if I should take pain killers for all the joint pain, back and neck ache or what...

Guess I just have to get the scopes done and see.

Hi, I too had symptoms similar to how you describe and I have IBD, the only difference with mine was that, as I have crohns as opposed to Colitis, I didn't pass blood, it was usually mucous. The smell itself is usually a sign that all is not right so I would get thoses scopes asap if I were you. Keep us posted.

I'd get the scopes ASAP and then really listen to my doctor. It COULD be IBD or Crohn's or diverticulitis or many many other things. There's diverticulitis, ulcers, and a strange twisting of the intestines and even allergy to wheat or other things that would really set your system wrong. Only a doctor can tell you what is going on. Submit to the doctor's testings and just listen to what they have to say and go from there.

Thanks so much for your input guys, I really appreciate it.

I thought the smell might be a sign, haha, I couldn't believe something like that could come from my body!

And as for the twisting of the intestines, I wouldn't be suprised. I don't know how likely this is - but this has all happened since immediately after my caesarian 15 months ago. So I was wondering whether maybe my intestines got twisted, or damaged. Who knows.

I'm definately getting these scopes chased up and will be sure to post back as I'm sure I'll need more support if it happens to be one of these things. Thanks so much once again.

Please see your doctor and get the scope as soon as possible.
When I was diagnosed with Crohn's & Colitis I had all these symptoms.
The blood in/on the stool, came and went, depending on how much the bowel was inflammed and ulcerated.
The odor as my doctor informed me they refer to as 'blood gas'.

The swishing noise in the abdomen he said were referred to as 'audible bowel sounds'.

You could be sufferening from one of many ailments...
but please get it checked asap and come back to let us know.

Healing hugs~Nancy

TM171 I echo everyone elses sentiments.. You're displaying classic symptomology for any of the various forms of IBD... get scoped ASAP, and see a GI immediately

There is no bleeding with IBS so if anything your symptoms point towards IBD (either crohns or ulcerative colitis) should you get scoped and if your doc says "crohns-colitis" don't misunderstand that as being BOTH UC and CD because it's not...crohns-colitis mean CD is affecting your colon where UC typically hangs out.

Hi,
It sounds like you may be a little in denial about whats going on with your body...its natural. Nobody wants to have an IDB or any chronic illness for that matter. I agree with the above posters, get in checked out, I experienced the same things a few years back and it turned out to be Celiac Disease, I now have Crohn's as well. the point is you need to find out exactly whats going on because ignoring it won't make it go away. Best of Luck!

Diseases like Crohn's and Celiac frequently onset after pregnancy so while it may be twisting of the intestines, its just as likely to be one of these diseases

Thats so weird, I had the same problem!!!. I had my daughter by caesarean (my 2nd one) in the July and a few months after I developed a lump in my lower right hand side of my abdomen, that turned out to be a part of my small bowel that had somehow become attached to my rectum. 23 months after the birth of my daughter I had to have major surgery as that portion of small bowel had become fistulated. I firmly believe that the second caesarean messed things up internally, strange that you have had a similar problem.
