Daughter just diagnosed

My Daughter who is 7 was just diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. she was started on Colazal 6 caps per day. She can not seem to be able to swallow pills so, I have to open them up and mix with applesauce which makes her mouth yellow. Anyone out there on this? I am concerned with long term use it will stain her teeth. For now we are able to brush off the yellow. She also needs iron which I have yet to get her to swallow the pill. Any suggestions on how to get a child to swallow pills?

I am sorry to hear your young daughter has been diagnosed with Colitis.
When I was little for years I couldn't swallow pills. I had to take liquid forms of Prednisone, Azulfidine, and a few other I can't really remember. They all tasted nasty. The way my parents helped me to learn to swallow pills where to start off with little tiny sugar candies and try to swallow them. I found this website that pretty much sums up what I was taught.

Hi mom2Morgan! I am so sorry to hear about Morgan's diagnosis. Has she improved since starting treatment?

There are many parents just like you on the forum. I highly suggest checking out the Parents of Kids with IBD sub-forum:

I bet if you post your question about swallowing pills there, you'll get a lot of advice. However, I did come across the following thread that I thought would be helpful:
