Default Omega-3 Fatty Acids Won't Prevent Crohn's Relapse

"Omega-3 free fatty acids don't help prevent relapses in patients with Crohn's disease, concluded two studies published in the April 9 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"These studies are quite definitive," said study lead author Dr. Brian Feagan, professor of medicine and director of Robarts Clinical Trials at the Robarts Research Institute, University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada. "The bottom line is, if you're looking to prevent a relapse of Crohn's disease, these are not effective and there are other drugs that work."

Other experts, however, wondered if the dosing used in the study had anything to do with it.

"Maybe there's a perfect dose and maybe this one was too high," said Dr. Timothy Pfanner, assistant professor of internal medicine at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and a gastroenterologist with Scott & White. "There are a bunch of medications we use now in Crohn's disease that when you start going high, there's either no benefit or a diminishment of response."

I think Omega 3 is still an important addition to us as it is a is a very potent anti inflammtory and we need to have a proper Omega 6 Omega 3 ratio for good health. But maybe more studies are needed for the optimal dose

They don't control for how much omega 6 they had in the diet. Also they say that the rate of relapse was the same across all groups. Their groups have one with omega 3, one with placebo, and another with either prednisone or something else?

Also they didn't say how much omega 3, they were taking. They didn't say whether the pills were enteric coated, to only disolve in the gut. Ultimately there are studies which have elemental diets working as well as prednisone. Which means something in the diet... food itself causes the symptoms.

Was thinking of something else. I saw last night that about 55% of people with Crohn's have it of the colon. Most fats are supposed to be absorbed by then, as well as sugars, proteins. From what I read recently the colon is where all the bacteria live to break down the plant matter that you could not. Mainly absorbs the the water and bile salts left over from the real digestion.

Which does make you wonder about the whole diet thing. Still there are people who control the disease with diet, if you read on the SCD sites there are a whole army of them. And studies as I've said that controlled it with an elemental diet.

Just makes me wonder I guess.
