Peanuts!!

At christmas I ate some peanuts and ended up in casualty with a blockage (which sorted its self out) I had an ileostomy at the time, I had this reversed in February. On Friday I decided to eat some more peanuts not thinking anything as my ileostomy has gone. I was in pure agony, I was being sick and had the worst stomach cramps, my husband went mad with me for eating the peanuts but I genuienly didnt think there would be a problem, this went on for about 6 hrs, i finally went to bed and thought if it didnt get any better i would go to casualty in the morning, when i woke up i could feel my bowels working and the pain had more or less gone but felt really tender, has anyone else ever had problems eating peanuts? I ate them before my ileostomy and have never had a problem before even though i have had half my bowels out before having the ileostomy!!

Hello Christie,
Do you already have IBD?
Have you had any endoscopies to check the condition of your intestinal system?
The reaction to the peanuts could be an allergic reaction in its very severe form.
Have you been checked out by any allergy specialists?
Perhaps you should check this out with your GI specialist. In the meantime stay away from all forms of peanuts.
Feel better soon.
Hugs and best wishes

I can't eat peanuts or seeds or most nuts. I can get away wit handful of unsalted almonds every now and then though. Peanuts makes me through up and I cramp the entire night and my husband gets really mad if he saw me trying to eat it too :) I really don't know the root of this problem, I just wrote it off to allergic reaction. I think you should avoid nuts and seeds and mention this problem to your GI. Good luck and I hope you get better soon.

For some reason, ALmonds seem to digest better..

Pistacios don't seem to give me a problem either but just to be safe i am avoiding them.

I have had Crohns for 20 years and have never had a problem before, I know i shouldnt have eaten them when i had my stoma but thought it would be ok after (didnt even think twice) I now know its a no no!!

I have had my stoma for 14 years. I know of things I am not suppose to eat; peanuts being one of them. Though, I've eaten them on occasion without having issue. I'd say the limit quantity being a little more than a table spoon maybe and I masticate them for so long so it's more or less equivalent to peanut butter. They don't cause me trouble in these conditions. Otherwise... it really not so safe. I never had blockage caused by peanut but I'm sure that would happen if I were to take more than my 1 tablespoon once in a while...

I really don't know about what I am gonna say but I am guessing that can before ileostomy and can't after ileostomy might be due to the fact that your small bowel ends up absorbing water to compensate for the absence of colon. Hence, maybe that because the stool are thicker than they would normally be, maybe it's causing issues and "scratching" your bowel (cause peanuts definitively remain peanuts through digestion: it might just be here but we would call that the Oh henry! effect in my surroundings lol).
Anyway, that's just an hypothesis :)
