Still new, but making progress - and a question about missing work

Hi everyone!

I posted in the "Your Story" section the other day, but I figured it made some sense to come hang out here in the Undiagnosed Club while things are still pending.

Long and short - I went to the hospital on November 5 because of a recent fever and continuing AWFUL stomach pains on the lower right side of my stomach. While there, they did a couple of CT scans which showed that my small intestine was inflamed and also revealed some thickening of the small intestine wall. I've had stomach issues my whole life, but they were issues that I considered to more of an annoyance than anything else (bloating, nausea, occasional urgency, pain here and there). Now they're on the hunt for a possible diagnosis - at this point it's been narrowed down to severe infection or possible Crohn's.

Since being released from the hospital a week ago, I've been taking antibiotics, and my pain has improved greatly, though my side still a little bit tender and occasionally achy (especially if I have too much sugar). I've been eating a very low-fiber diet, which is driving me nuts, but I'm afraid to start with anything too heavy quite yet.

I'm having my first colonoscopy tomorrow, and I'm pretty nervous about it. I start prep with 4 bisacodyl pills today at 2, followed by 10 ounces of magnesium citrate at 6 PM, and then 5 more ounces at 7 AM tomorrow morning. Procedure is at 11, but I have to be there by 10. Yikes.

One of my big questions right now is - has anyone else missed a bunch of work while working through diagnostic tests, follow-up appointments, and possible treatments? I'm an attorney, and I had a bunch of trials scheduled for the next few weeks, but I'm moving them all out of an abundance of caution. It seems like it's taking me a while to get back on my feet post-hospitalization, and it seems like even after the colonoscopy I'm going to require follow-up and, if it's Crohn's, a course of steroids, so I'm nervous about how I'm going to feel for the next month. I've been going in and going to court as best I can, but it seems unwise for me to attempt to take on big, important, life-changing tasks when these doctor appointments keep popping up, or if I have to further treat whatever I have and deal with those side effects.

Thanks all! You guys are great!

I also missed a lot of work at first. The biggest thing I can say is give yourself time to heal. I went back to work a couple of days after my last hospitalization and it did not go well. I was dealing with new medication side effects plus not being fully recovered plus work stress. I made it three days and then had to take off work for a week to give myself time to properly recover and get acclimated to the meds.
