Arthritis and skin

Hi all,

I am suffering quite badly with my joint pain and often, on one elbow, i get a nasty red flare but this one is different from the other red flares. Does anyone else have a red flare where the skin is so sensitive that if i turn over in bed, or shift my sleeve up, the skin actually comes off very easily. Its rather like carpet burn and scabs over. I feel like bandaging it up! It is happening more and more these days and seems the skin cells just aren't sticking to each other like they should.

Advice anyone? Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Spooky
That sounds just terrible for you.
It is time for you to see a skin specialist as well as your GI.
Call them up and see them soon as possible.
Feel better soon
Hugs and best wishes

Hi Spooky,
I'm not sure if this is what you mean by red flare but for the last 6 months now my hands have been going through stages of irritation, swelling, cracking and peeling followed by a period of healing. It started from a small patch of red tender skin on each hand. I went to a derm a few months back and was given some Fluocinonide ointment to treat possible eczema or psoriasis. The cream really has not helped much other than making my hands less stiff due to decreased inflammation. Just recently I have noticed that my hands tend to go through a small healing stage shortly after my Remicade infusions. Do you get Remicade infusions? If so do these red flares you get follow any pattern around your infusions?

Hi, chicken,

I have no remicade treatment at all. I think it might be psoriasis as i get patches on my face and arms, but its definitely linked to the bones or soft tissues of the joints. My joints also feel a bit better sometimes but then they are excruciating and then the red starts, but as i say, there is one patch on my elbow that the skin cells do not seem to stick to each other. the slightest move on my sleeve ends up very sore, like i have a carpet burn or something. Think i might try the cream, is it on prescription or over the counter. I feel like bandaging the elbow up so nothing can graze it and take the skin off. I get lots of joints over the body that go red and are very painful but no skin sheers off.

Thanks for the advice though and i will try the cream.

The cream is a prescription that I got from a dermatologist. I would recommend contacting your GI doc first because it usually takes a while to be able to see a derm for the first time. My GI doc was able to get me an appt with a derm 3 days after I saw him. Good luck with everything and if you find anything else out please let me know. I feel for you and really hope things get better soon.
