Help with pain please?

My daughter is suffering with painfull cramps about half hour after eating... she has Crohn's, annal fissures, and a perianal abscess for about 7 years. She is very used to pain of all kinds but this seems to be new!! More like a wave of pain then cramps that last for about 30 mins. Does anyone have any idea what works best? she has tried all kinds of narcotics, but doesnt use them anymore, even tried marajuana, helps a little but would appreciate any advice or help, maybe something else is going on?? Does anyone have any ideas?

I was having pain like you describe last fall, my doctor's view was to treat the cause of the pain, rather than the pain itself. It meant I had to live with the pain until the steroids he prescribed started to work, and even after they did, I still had some pain, but for me it was better than being comatose and not being able to go to work because I was on pain meds. I understand this approach may not work for everyone and also depends on the level of the pain.

Has your daughter been to see her GI recently?

I also wanted to add that a liquid diet for a few days seemed to help.

Sorry your daughter is having so much pain. Sometimes a heating pad can help a little bit.

Im sorry your daughter has so much pain and pain meds don't work

The suggestions made to you so far are good ones to try.

The only other thing I could suggest is ginger tea or ginger ale (maybe flatten the ginger ale though to remove some of the carbonation). Ginger is good at breaking up the gas that could be causing cramping after a meal as well as easing nausea.

Make sure you talk to your daughters GI so they are aware of the situation and see if they have any other suggestions to help.

I hope she feels better soon. Please let us know how everything goes

I'm very sorry to hear she's having so much pain.

I just wanted to second the suggestions about ginger ale and heating pads. It won't take it all away, but if it can help a little, that's a plus, right? Peppermint can also be soothing to the stomach. I sometimes drink peppermint tea when mine is acting up.

I'm also wondering if either of you have contacted her GI about this. Is she currently taking any medications for Crohn's?

You might also want to check out the Parents of Kids with IBD section, here, if you haven't before.

Has she ever tried Bentyl or Levsin? Both are good, Levsin you can put it used your tongue
an it works pretty fast.

That sounds very similar to the pain that I have when in a flare.

I massage my abdomen from the top down and around in a circular motion somewhat like my bowel moves, starting gently and then pushing pretty hard. I'll also get on my hands and knees and rock back and forth rounding my back up and then scooping it down - some basic yoga moves I think. And I also use the heating pad and hot baths.

Sometimes laying on my side can help too, usually if I can push out some gas/air it helps .

It does sound like a check up might be in order. I'm sending all my best your way!

Hi

I also used to experience this after eating. I used to take anti sickness before anything I ate and if I was in that much pain I would take tramadol and buscopan. I also for a while had a liquid diet to give my guts a rest, it reduced pain and filled me up

Hope you get it sorted very soon

All the best
