How long do flare ups last?? pls help

I was diagnosed with crohns colitios in 2011. I'm still learning new things about it every day. I've been flaring up now on and off for 3 weeks now. Its at its worst of an evening time. How long do flare ups last? The last 2 nites I've taken Tramado for the pain, I don't want to take them every nite cos I don't want to rely on them, so I'm manning tonite out. Does anyone flare up on and off for weeks on end?? Please help I'm getting so fed up with being ok one min and in pain the next :'(

For me a flare lasts 2 or three days then im good for a few weeks to a month. For most of them I can deal with Tylenol gel caps and lots of Gatorade. If the pain is grater than that I head to the ER. What kind of treatment are you on? It may be possible to shorten the delivery window. For a while I was every 4 weeks on remicade. Now that my system is liking it I am every 6 to 8 weeks

My medication is Asacol and azothriopine. Last time I flares up for weeks like this I went to hospital and they gave me Tramadol and told to call my specialist the following day. Think I may need to call my specialist in the morning. Last time I had a flare up like this was in December. From then to 3 weeks ago I felt amazing. Then it hit me hard 3 weeks ago. Is this normal? Is this what Crohns colitios is about?

Stacey ring your GI. Any change in symptoms warrants a call in my opinion .. indicates you maybe need meds adjusted / something else added.

In terms of how long do flares last it is different for everyone. Ive been in this beast of a flare for about 18mnths.. hasn't gone into remission because of problems with different meds and didn't realise i had it higher up in small intestines too.

you may need a short course of pred to bring it back under control.

Hope your okay xx

I will defo call him in the morning. I'm so scared of going back on pred. They turned me into a monster last time I was on them. Do flare ups come and go this quickly? I'm ok during the day and in agony at night time. Do u think its safe to take Tramadol 3 nites in a row?

Tramadol literally knocked me out and I was still spaced out in the morning lol I would try some co-codamol first and heat patches/hot water bottles see how you get on and tramadol as last resort.

I know pred is horrible but you may need it hun.

Also I don't know if ive asked you before but have they suggested infliximab or humira? In my understanding Asacol isn't particularly strong.

And yes things can change dramatically and certain time of day can be better / worse

Get on your GI early doors tomorrow and ask to be seen

Co-dydramol doesn't work for me so I'm gonna go straight for the Tramadol. It knocks me out too but least I won't b in pain. My specialist has not metioned those meds before but I will mention it when I speak to him. I will defo call him tomorrow, my partner has told me that I WON'T B GOING TO WORK TOMORROW bless him. Thank u so much for your advice babe. I'm so glad I joined this forum. I'm getting myself go aggitated worrying about this. How are u doing?

My current flare has lasted about 18 months also. Not TERRIBLE every day, but slowly getting worse on the whole with a lot moire terrible days now. I had what I considered "minor" flares during the last 11 years about 3 times a year, but I could handle those. They went away after about a week or two. I wonder if it's all related to how much bowel is affected and how quickly the inflammation goes away when we talk about how long a flare lasts.

You hang in there, and I hope it's one of those short ones, and you may not need long-term meds.

I have woken up this morning still spaced out from my Tramadol last night but I'm pain free till tonite. It seems to b evenings where they are at their worst. My partner has called my work today and said I won't b in today. My mission today is to get in touch with my specialist. He is the hardest man to get hold of. I can't wait till August to see him. It needs to b this week I see him. Thanks to u all for your advice, I will get the hang of this xxxx

Got throu to my specialist straight away this morning. He wants to see me on Friday. I'm so pleased cos I am so fed up at the moment. Roll on Friday.

My episodes, I love our choice of words,,,last from 3-4 days to lessening of the pain up to a few weeks. Tramadol and Vic get me through the rough days.

I learn new crohns phrases ever day lol. I don't like taking Tramadol but its the only thing that stops the pain. So needs must. Xx

Stacey, is there something that you eat every day that might be causing the pain to get worse? Just a thought and maybe you've already considered that. I know I seem to flare hours after eating the wrong thing. It might be something that you didn't have a problem with before that is now triggering symptoms.

Heyya babe. I have had a think about what I've eaten over the past few weeks, and I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary, I'm normally really good with my food. Defo think that this started when my kids got the stomach bug that's been going round. I do feel a fraud sometimes thou cos this flare up seems to come and go. Its at its worst in the evening once I rest. I'm just really glad that my specialist will see me on Friday. I personally think he leaves it too long between appointments to see me. How are u doing? Hope ur well xxx

I'm doing okay. Feeling manageable when I don't eat things I shouldn't.... last night I made biscuits for the hubs and had just a bite cause they smelled so good - yeah that was a mistake. Today is better, just some little sharp crampy pain in my right belly. I seem to have more pain evenings too sometimes. Seems like it's taking forever to get to June 12th when I can finally see the GI doc!

They seem to leave appointment times so far apart. When I described to my doc where the pain is he said it sounds like the stomach. Can u get crohns in the stomach?

You can get Crohn's anywhere in the digestive tract, from mouth to anus. That is one of the things that differentiates it from UC, which is only in the large intestine.

I know what you mean about the appointment times, it seems like everyone has the same problem trying to get in. I wish it was easier to be seen sooner! At least they do have openings for when you need to be seen quickly, like in your case it's a good thing they can get you in this week.

Yes, another difference between UC and Crohn's is that it can flare up anywhere along the digestive tract in sections that are not connected.
