How do I find a specialist?

I need a dermatologist, in the Boston area, that is an expert on Hidradenitis suppurativa. Does anyone have any idea on how to research this?

I use Castle Connolly to find top doctors, but you probably need to call to see if they specialize in that area.

To see a specialist, you usually need a referral from a general practitioner. I don't know for certain if this would apply to dermatologists, but I'd assume so. They would probably have a better idea of which one would have the experience you need, as well. Good luck!

How you find a specialist can depend on your health insurance coverage. If you are in the US, HMO requires that you get a referral to a specialist from your Primary Care Physician otherwise you will not be covered for whatever services you receive. You have a bit more freedom with PPO so long as they are in your network I believe.

In general, your GP can usually give you an initial recommendation. You can also look up hospitals that are well known for their dermatology programs or whatnot and see who the doctors are on their directory. You can also go to the web site of an organization that caters to people with a certain condition or the web site of an association that specializes in dermatology and see if you can find a doctor through their directory. (for example if you go to CCFA.org you will be able to use their directory to look up GIs in your area)

I would say first and foremost review your health insurance plan and see what is covered, what isn't and what their process is so that you don't incur any unnecessary fees from doctors.

Apparently there is a Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation. They have a "find a doctor" link. That might be a place to start. There is one doctor listed in Boston. If he can't take you, you could probably still ask them if they could recommend another doctor. Good luck!
