Gluten and dairy free foods during flare?

To all those gluten and dairy free Crohnies -
What do you eat during a flare up?

It's tough for me not to reach for refined starch during a flare up which gives me immediate relief but I'm pretty sure it's not helping the issue. White bread, plain biscuits, potatoe chips (although recent heartburn hasn't loved these).

I've recently moved to Japan so gluten free would be a REAL challenge here. Besides the fact that I can't read the writing on most products, gluten free is a completely foreign concept. Soya Sauce is also used on so much.

I've also recently started a running programme and was doing so well so would love an option that would help to keep energy up too.

I'd appreciate any suggestions!

"My current basic rule is this: if you’re going to eat at a restaurant, eat where most of the ingredients are not processed. You should look for restaurants that focus on slow, organic, natural foods. This does not eliminate the possibility of cross contamination, but it will be much easier for your chef to understand what she/he can and cannot prepare for you."

I am on a gluten and dairy free diet due to allergy, also on low residue for 4 weeks. I find at the moment I cant really find anything to eat so I am living on white rice and chicken. Very boring I know but cant introduce anything else because to scared how my body will react. I have had tined tuna the past two days and today and last night my gut feels bad and really bloated so that is now on my bad food list, there is not much on my good list at the moment. I think the best thing to do is eat anything natural like fresh meats. Also try and get a translation app on your phone or by a book then you can read the back of foods. Good luck and take care.

I had to come back on and say it's not the tuna that has give me a bad gut and bloating it is Salad Cream. Had a tiny squirt yesterday and the day before. I added it to my tuna for a tiny bit of flavour. Was not 100% sure it was tuna that done it to me so checked out my food diary over the past couple of weeks, that's why it is great to keep a food diary. Also Heinz Salad Cream does not state it contains gluten, I went on line and searched for it. You can buy a gluten free one from Health shops will have to shop around, Really do miss flavour. HMMMMMMMM. XXX

Have you tried Tamari soy sauce which is gluten free and comes from Japan.

When I was flaring mashed potato was always good.

I'm always wheat/gluten and dairy free, not just for flare ups, as it causes them.

There is lots to still eat. Mainly fresh stuff. I still eat potato, as it doesn't effect me.

I eat soya also.

general diet:
Breakfast: Fruit/soya yogurts/rice krispies and soya mile
Lunch: omelette with salad and chips
Dinner: chicken or beef with potatoes or rice and veg/salad

Snacks: crisps, fruit, gluten and dairy free stuff from supermarkets (may be hard in Japan)

Thanks everyone. I've started on a dairy and gluten free diet because I'm just really unwell.
I'm going to see a local doctor in a few weeks so until then I'll be kind to my screaming body!
@ Hugh - thanks for that link. I think she describes the situation here very well. To live glute and dairy free you pretty much have to eat at home, always.
