Has anyone used suppositories?
My dr. called them into the pharm for me (I haven't picked them up yet)... How have other people done with them? |

Not actually used suppositories, but I have used stuff called "coli-foam", a bit like one of those whipped cream cans where you "apply the applicator" and fill yourself with a steroid-based foam. I got it when I was passing an alarming amount of blood for a number of days, and it worked very well. Due to a mistake at the pharmacists, I've still got about 150 years supply of the stuff stacked up
Applying the stuff is painless and slightly uncomfortable... it's also totally undignified.... but since when have crohnies had any dignity?

I don't think I ever had my dignity to begin with.
Years ago, before I was even diagnosed, I had to use them for nausea. But that was... high school? College? I'm 28 now. I don't even remember if they worked. If you don't mind me asking, is the coli-foam like... you put the nozzle thing up there and just... squeeze? That sounds awfully uncomfortable. |

I've never had suppositories, but I used corti-foam and it was easy to apply. It wasn't uncomfortable or anything, just spray like aerosol whipped cream into the applicator, just goes in your butt a teeny bit, and push the applicator.
I also was supposed to use mesalamine rectal enemas, but they never stayed where they were supposed to stay - meaning I would immediately "go". They were painful to insert at the time, not sure why the insertion was different for the two, but the foam stayed there better cuz it was so light. |

butt rockets lol!!
i thought they looked like shells. like as in bang bang from a gun, not sea creature. YES i had to use the stupid things when i was little. honestly, it wasnt too bad. i found them MUCH easier than the mesalamine enemas. like MBH said, those hurt and the liquid wouldnt stay put. i never could hold those in either. but, with the suppository, it stays lower down...the enemas would squirt up really high. and it wasnt too bad to insert either. i just used a little bit of ky jelly to help. they melt pretty quickly so its not like you have this chuck of stuff in your butt for a very long time. *sigh* the joys of having unnatural things in your poo chute. |

I have Crohn's in my rectum. I have used Canasa suppositories (the suppository form of Asacol). I would use them immediately before bed, otherwise, I had trouble keeping them in. They also left an awful greasy mess in the toilet the next morning. All in all, not too happy with them. They were prescribed by a new GI and when I went back to my old GI, he didn't think they were the appropriate treatment for my case. I was more than happy to hear this news.
I also had some prescribed by a surgeon that were some special concoction made by the pharmacist at the hospital. I couldn't even get them to stay in, even when i went straight to bed. I just quit using them on my own. Also, in my experience, they are very expensive, even with insurance. Good luck! |

Coli-foam and MBH's Corti-foam sound like the same thing. You do just "insert" it and press the button. There must be some way of measuring the dose, otherwise the stuff would come out of your ears... but I can't remember how that happens.

I was prescribed cortisone suppositories a few years ago (way before my Chron's dx) for an internal thrombosing hemmorhoid. (In retrospect, I wonder whether this may have been an early symptom of CD....). Anyhoo... they're not the most comfortable to insert, but if you keep them in the fridge and then rub vaseline on the tip before you insert, they're easier to put in. I agree that you want to put them in right before bed. Another tip -- cover your finger with a finger-cot, and put vaseline on the finger-cot, too. Like with Shady, they also made my poo really greasy. But they did wonders for the hemorrhoid!

the thought of squirting an aerosol can of foam up my butt does not sound appealing....
then again i'm picturing it EXACTLY like a whip cream can.... star-tipped nozzle and all! |

If you get the choice, avoid the star tip nozzle!

Ok, I've "blasted off" twice now. After the first one, I was in pain all night and then woke up at 5am with cramps, gas, and diarrhea. It lasted most of the morning. Fun. Then after the second one, I woke up fine..... ??

Hey Kello
![]() Nope, definitely not sure they were caused by the rocket ships LOL It's absolutely probable that I could've/would've had a crappy night anyway. The third night went well like the second one. My doctor had given me 6 samples and the last 2 went great, so I picked my Rx up today. No, not as bad as I thought (feared)... some Vaseline and good to go! |

LOL, butt rockets. I take Tylenol suppositories if I ever have a bad fever, but I'm liable to barf up pills. Just slip right up. And I took the pentasa enemas, but they didn't do crap for me. Glad to hear that you're blasting off fine tho!

LMAO @ BWS.... I know that! I just was looking for some excitem--- NO wait, I mean, I KNOW THAT!!!
Kello ~ Yeah, it's the first side effect listed. However, my GI just emailed me back and said that I'm on the same medicine orally (Lialda <mesalamine>), so if anything, it should have given me headaches when I began that at least 6 months ago, if at all. (That's right, I have email access to my GI... anyone jealous?)
