Scared...and so done with this!

I have felt so bad the last two weeks...went to ER last week at this time, and may be going back in a bit..who knows. My blood sugar is elevated, my heart rate is up...had trigger point injections today with some newer steroids. I feel so dehydrated...STILL waiting on HUMIRA to send out nurse to begin the injections...a week and a half. My Lilada is being passed with my stools...I feel like an elephant with the bloat, D, & in pain...

Hi lisadc. I'm so sorry you're in this place. I'd suggest you go to the ER and call the specialist.
The meds going through need to be changed.

Sending you my support.

Hi... Went to the Er, big ordeal. My diabetes was way out of control, was on the edge of full blown DKA. Had to have meds which caused tremors. Arterial blood gases times two...horrible experiences. Follow up visit with the gp this morning and will see him as well as gi next week. Spoke to gi nurse and she is contacting Humira once again. Feeling cruddy, tired, and weak. But counting my blessings .

Hi Lisa, Sorry to hear you're going through so much. I hope things start to get under control and your Humira nurse is assigned to you soon so that you can start it.

Glad you got yourself to the ER but sorry that it was such an ordeal. Do you monitor you urine ketones when your BS are elevated so that you can know earlyish that your getting ketotic?

xmdmom, no I haven't. I was diagnosed last year but was never really "taught" how to care for myself with diabetes. I feel really ignorant when it comes to making sure everything is okay. I monitor it with the finger stick, but that has been it. My new GP recently took me off my tradjenta (pill) and said to just adjust it with the insulin as needed because he felt all the steroids were making it go up and down. How can I monitor my ketones? Is it something I can do at home? I really need to find an education class nearby. It is hard to figure out what to eat that is good for the crohns and for the diabetes...they don't necessarily match together. But wow what a wake-up call.

Do you have type 2 diabetes? DKA is much less common with type 2 than type 1 but can definitely happen.

For children with type 1 diabetes, they used to say check urine ketones (with a dip stick) if you are feeling ill and your blood sugars are >250 and then call doctor is ketones more than a trace. An education class would be great. It can be really difficult to manage diabetes with sickness, change in caloric intake and steroids. Is there a diabetic nurse educator who can help you? Have you seen an endocrinologist? I would try to see one or preferably both to get some good education and recommendations about how to manage your diabetes during sickness, poor intake, steroids etc.

Yes, xmdmom, I am type 2. I was surprised this was even a possibility. (I have students with type 1.) I haven't seen an endo. yet, but when I see my GP again this week I am requesting to be sent to one. There are classes nearby and I will be getting involved in that as well. I ate an apricot for a snack last night and it threw my number back up pretty high so I had to do more insulin. I have so much to learn...I have got to figure out healthy foods that won't just shove my numbers up. Thanks for the advice! Will definitely be using it to move past this!
