I just ate red jello! Help!

I guess I didn't read the instructions very well. The doctor's office didn't say anything about not eating red jello before a scope but everything I have been reading online says not to. What do I do? I have to drink the first round in about 3 hrs. Will I be OK for my scope tomorrow? Grrrrrrr!

I would make sure to drink lots of clear fluids. Make sure your doctor's office knows ASAP (if your scope is mid to late day, let them know as early in the morning as you can). I am not sure of the immediate concern, but I think the dye may resemble blood in the digestive system and make diagnosis difficult. Maybe it is an irritant. Pretty certain someone here will know.

The red dye in jello temporarily dyes the intestine red, making it difficult to see what is inflamed and what is not, from my understanding. Definitely mention it to your doc

My scope is tomorrow at 2. The last time I ate red jello was around 1:30 or 2:00 today. I'm hoping because it was about 24 hour prior I will be ok. I will take my first round of the prep in a bout an hour.

I did something similar prior to a sigmoidoscopy. I had to drink and entire bottle of laxative and not really thinking bought a cherry flavored one which was red. I realized this in horror moments after I drank the entire bottle. I called the on call doctor at the GI and let them know.

They just told me to drink a whole lot of water to try to flush out the red. My sigmoidoscopy went ahead with no issues.

You should all them and ask them what to do. That way your procedure can hopefully go on as planned.

I drank strawberry milkshake when I was on clear fluids only before a barium meal/swallow test. I knew full well it wasn't allowed, but I was pissed with the doctor because I thought he was wasting time repeating tests when I'd already been tested so much and didn't really care if the test worked or not. They didn't notice; the test went fine, they got nice clear pictures of everything they needed to. (And it was a waste of time - didn't tell me anything I didn't know already. )

The instructions will always err on the side of caution and clean patients out as much as it's safe to do so. Everyone will clear out differently, due to many factors such as disease state, previous diet, response to the prep, medications, variations in natural function of the digestive system, etc., but they give the same standard instructions to everyone, with the odd exception, such as having had large amounts of intestine removed. The standard instructions aim to include even those most difficult to clean out, so for many, not following them to the letter - consuming something that's not a clear fluid, not managing all the prep or bringing some back up - will still result in being adequately clear for the test.

So unless you're very unlucky, I think it should probably be ok.

And if your doctor didn't even mention avoiding red jello, they can't be overly worried about it.

Well they said things looked normal. They took tissue for biopsies. They said I could possibly have Barret's Esophagus? They said they would test for celiac. Just frustrated cause this has been going on for years. And I guess I was expecting more. Any of you had a similar experience?

DaKing, been there for sure. Most of my tests have come back normal or with just mild abnormalities. Still trying to figure out what is wrong.

Although, the biopsies sometimes reveal things that can't be detected otherwise. In my case they did not.

They said it will be about 2 weeks for the results. So frustrating. Sorry to hear you are still trying to find answers. At least I got through that awful prep!. Ugh. That was nasty!

A lot of people will understand how you're feeling. When you know you're sick, you want tests to reflect that to validate how you're feeling and to hopefully lead to treatment. Don't be too disheartened by negative results. There are many things which can go wrong with the digestive system besides IBD which cannot be detected by scopes. At least the scope will rule a lot of things out.
