Psycho Therapy for Those with a Chronic Illness

My GI has suggested that I talk to a Psycho Therapist. She believes (and I feel that way many times) that when you are Chronically ill, that you start to feel the illness defines me. And in all honesty, when you have to work your eating around Dr. Appts, drug store, etc. because you are afraid of an accident or getting sick while on the outing I do have to agree with her.

I try to separate myself from my illness but it does define what I can do and does cause stress. It is rare that I can go out because it does cause Anxiety and/or I'm not feeling up to it.

Has anyone talked to a Psycho Therapist and if so, did it help?

Thanks.

Hi.

I've not done psychotherapy but I am doing cognitive behavioral therapy. Very pleased with the results.

DJW - do you think Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is something that helps you with how the disease controls you and how you feel about yourself and what you can contribute to others? I've read about it but not sure how exactly it helps. Any info you can provide is greatly appreciated

I think so. (I was referred by a psychiatrist for CBT)
I'm in it for anxiety which can go hand in hand with the disease.
CBT is giving me a better handle on dealing with the excessive anxiety. It helps with how I think about situations and deal with them.

I'm going to start CBT for depression in the new year.

CBT isn't the be all and end all for mental health treatment. Example: I'm still having a hard time accepting the fact that I can't work. My fatigue is still up and down but the psychological bases of fatigue is being delt with but it doesn't help with Crohn's caused fatigue.

That's been my experience.

I've been through a bit of talk therapy which worked well during a crisis.

Has the doctor recommended psychotherapy?

Yes my GI has recommended Psychotherapy and in the process for looking for one. Maybe a Psychiatrist would be a 2nd choice if they cannot find one.

Thanks for your input!
