Being diagnosed with Crohns seemed good at the time

For at least 20 years I have had more diarrhea than the average bear and my GP's seemed to dismiss it as IBS and change your diet and you will live with that. At last a new GP did a Calprotectin stool test and the results came back with >300. He firstly blamed my use of Isobrufen for the result and I stopped taking my Nasiad medication.

I was due for an annual Colonoscopy in March 2016 and asked the Gastroenterologist to check to see if I had Crohns. He got hold of my recent blood and stool tests from the Pathology Lab and inspected inside my small intestine and took two biopsies. The Pathology report on the biopsies came back with confirmed Crohns.

Now I knew what had been causing my diarrhea and why it had been so debilitating especially during the last 3 years. That's why I felt it was good to be diagnosed at the time. Now I had something to work on.

It is pretty frustrating trying to work out what foods I can eat, and from this Forum, I can see that seems to be the major issue in controlling this disease. It is also sad to see the amount of surgery other members have had to endure. While I was, and still am, passing so many liquid stools I see many other members having the same problem and that is comforting as I don't feel I am the only one with the problem. A problem shared is a smaller problem (or something like that).

One issue that is not resolved exactly yet, but needs to be is the use of Nasaids and that effect on the small intestine. I was treated for arthritis with a Nasaid firstly in 1973!! and only ceased in 2016. That was 43years of Nasaids. I think they rotted my small intestine into the ulcerated mess it is today. Let's hope my GP and Gastro specialist can get it fixed or at least comfortable.

Appreciating all the comments in the Forum,

Regards

Richard

Welcome. You might want to try a food diary to see what foods aggravate your gut. This is a great place for support. Feel free to visit here often .

Welcome! A food diary is a great idea, as Ron said, although other things like stress can also trigger your symptoms. I think you are on the right track with getting your doctors to agree on a medication/treatment plan. As an aside, when I started Humira recently I found my minor arthritis symptoms also disappeared...Humira is also a treatment for certain forms of arthritis. Might want to ask your doctors if they can consider your arthritis when deciding on the right meds for you.
