Amoebic Enterocolitis Mimicking Crohn’s Disease - Case Report

Hey all,

I found the article linked below very interesting – it provides more evidence that Crohn’s is not a singular entity, but rather a group of symptoms with multiple etiologies.

My Support Groups:
I don't think this is reporting some different form of Crohn's. Its merely a case report of a misdiagnosis based on visual scope results that was later corrected after pathology results came back.

The patient was incorrectly diagnosed as having Crohn's and prescribed steroid when in actuality they had amoebiasis. They were later treated with nitroimidazole, followed by a second-line agent to cure a luminal infection brought on by incorrect treatment in the first place.

Yeah, agreed xeridea. My point though, is that when someone says they have Crohn's, their disease could result from any number of etiologies. One person may have amoebiasis, another AIEC, another MAP, etc. Diagnostic criteria for Crohn's should be improved to help reduce current ambiguity.
