Haha I shore do love my pizza, which reminds me that I really need to eat some pizza soon. I need to go up to New York to get someof the real stuff, it's just not the same down in Bama. I think it has something to do with the water.

^ is the resident pizza expert

You have a place to stay in NY when you get the hankering for a slice or 2 or 3.

We go to Connie's whenever we're in Chicago. Where is Gino's East? Might have to check it out.

I've got some Italian pizza recipes in a cookbook laying around here, but haven't made one yet. They are a bit different than the American versions.

I pretty much will try any type, but one thing I do know, if the crust is nothing more than a flavorless cracker vehicle to hold toppings then I'll probably not like it.

That is what I found for "New York Pizza", hmm, I'm seeing good pizza, but is that what it looks like? What's it known for?

What's the unique part, or I guess what makes it so good, as I've never had it or been to NYC. I LOVE deep dish, that's what Chicago pizza is supposed to be, more or less. It's "pizza" to me, and it's the pinnacle of it.

Dan, there are two locations in Chicago, one is the original, and there's another elsewhere. Then there's 2 I believe in the suburbs, but they are known to cook the pizza's hit or miss, as far as quality. The original one is here:

That is sort of New York style pizza. A real New York style pizza has a slightly thinner crust. They are thin pizza's with the perfect proportions of cheese, toppings, and sauce all on a flavorful crust which is not too salted yet not too sweet. New York style pizza is a lot like Italian style pizza in that it embraces minimalist proportions as to not overwhelm the palate. It goes against the American motto of more is better and instead uses the best ingredients in small amounts so that each flavor can be individual, yet come to life as the one, the only New York pizza.

Hmm, I have never had NY pizza like I said, but hold thin crust from around here as less desirable than deep dish. Maybe it's never been made "authentically" and pales to NY/Italian style thin crust, but it is kinda boring and the crust is usually bland and crunchy. The cheese is often greasier and sometimes too salty. I like softer crust with a lot of flavor, the kind of crust you'd eat even if it weren't part of a pizza, you'd eat it alone. When I eat the Gino's East style (or Giordono's as well) they have what I've considered the perfect ratio of toppings to crust and flavors. I'll have to try NY style and see what all the fuss is about, though Jeff, you sound like you have a cooking show about it.

lol I love my pizza and I've gone many a place in search of the perfect one slice. I haven't found it quite yet and when I was in Italy I was not old enough to understand the complex nature of their pizza so I need to go back.

Nope it's not the same place. Grimaldi's in Brooklyn only has 10 topping at the most for there pizza. They don't offer much more then pizza and some sandwiches.

Yo yo yo, Brooklyn!

Grimaldi's is great. Lucali's also gets high marks. But a steak dinner at Peter Luger's would be my preference.

What's the thin crust taste like? Is it soft and flaky, and flavorful?

I just don't know, I've never had a thin crust (out of the like 20 different ones locally) that I've liked, it's too little, too crunchy, too weak, I want a pizza to be like a sandwich, nice and thick and soft with tons of flavor and substance and heavy toppings, but not overdone with saltiness. So I've always had a bad impression of "thin crust"...It's usually like a poptart with cheese and tomato sauce, and isn't "real" pizza to me.

Hmm, so Jeff, have you ever had a fancier thick crust? With just like cheese, sausage, and tomato sauce? With like a yellowish buttery crust that is very flaky yet soft too?

If you're talking about waffle crust, that's not thin-crust pizza...it's just bad!

The thing crust I like is a lot like a good French bread, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It has to be able to withstand me moving the slice from the plate to my mouth without everything me losing my toppings due to weakness. It's got a slightly sweet initial taste with a slightly salty after taste yet it does not take away from the rest of the ingredients.

I'm a simple man, I don't like a lot of toppings, sauce, cheese, etc. My favorite pizza's are margarita pizza's and that is usually what I will have to test whether a pizza place is good or not. If they can't make the simple margarita then they won't get my business. After the initial day I'll expand to ham or meatball. I don't really like too much on my pizza as I find if there is too much then my taste buds get overwhelmed and I just can't eat it then.

I've had a few of those types of pizza and I won't hold judgement as they weren't from Chicago. I have had the thicker Greek style pizza which is in between Chicago and New Haven style pizza and it's okya but not my favorite. Like I said I much rather a nice margarita pizza.

For those that don't know margarita pizza's contain red sauce, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil.

Benson:One day you and I need to meet up with Fen to have some real pizza.

Never tasted any pizza better than a real Italian one. Don't even need any fancy toppings, just tomato and cheese does it.
