To the forum. A lot of people use the Ensure/ Boost drinks to add calories. You can check out the diet and nutrition thread. There is a lot of info there.

I always think it is so wonderful when a spouse posts on the forum. He is lucky to have such a caring wife.

Hi there and welcome to the forum. It is a hard thing to do if he is in a flare. Prednisone in high doses makes you want to eat....so that should help, depending on how high he dose is. Ensure with high calories help if he is in a flare. Potatoes, protein, like lean chicken.. I am not a man so there are others who have put weight on and a body builder who can help.

How bad are his flares? Any surgery?

From the CCFA website:

Two-thirds to three-quarters of patients with Crohn's disease will require surgery at some point during their lives.

I'm also here just trying to educate myself about this disease bc my husband has it. Some of you are familiar bc I posted in 'Your Story'.

I was reading forums and wondering myself what is safe to eat? I noticed that a lot of people use Ensure and Boost and I bought him those right after his surgery but his doctor said that those have a lot of sugar and that's not good for D.

The best thing is bland food with no fat or sugar, mashed potatoes, rice milk and porridge. It differs from person to person, but the more bland and easy to pass through the better.

Ban: Not everyone has surgery, I had 2 resections but I am also alot older than some here and they got onto the right drug for them asap dx. When you start to narrow, and blockages are happening then surgery is a last resort. As you know if can come back.. but I couldnt take it any more and my intestines were looping and possible leaking and I lost 40 lbs in 2 months. The biologics were not an option. If people can get through their symptoms without surgery it is best, however if nothing is working, it maybe the only option. My sister has UC and CD and we both had surgery at the same time. The second time. His doctor should know when it is time. Good luck.
