Accutane is one of the more popular brand name's for the medication Isotretinoin, which is used in the treatment of Acne. It is known by other brand names also, including Claravis and Sotret [1].

Accutane is typically referred to people with more stubborn acne that has failed to go away through less aggressive treatment options.

Risk of IBD

While there have been many reported side effects of Accutane, one of the most concerning is the increased risk of IBD (both Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis). This association has been found by numerous studies [2], [3].

Roche Holding, the makers of Accutane lost the first of many lawsuits against the company in 2007 as the drug was found the be responsible for causing IBD [4].
