Aeromonas Hydrophila

Aeromonas hydrophila is a Gram Negative bacteria that tends to affect people with Compromised Immune Systems whether from disease or drugs that lower the immune system. Due to the nature of some of its potential symptoms, it can mimic a flare of Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, or other IBD or be a potential differential diagnosis. It not only affects the intestinal tract, but can affect the skin as well causing cellulitis, eczema, or myonecrosis. While Aeromonas hydrophilia can be detected in healthy individuals, it is not considered part of the normal intestinal flora.[1]

Symptoms

Diarrhea
Blood in stool
Mucus in stool
Gastroenteritis
Cellulitis
Eczema
Myonecrosis

Treatment

Treatment consists of Antibiotics such as florenicol, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, sulfonamide

I wish there was more information out there as to how it pertains to IBD and IBD medications. Unfortunately, it's quite sparse

No, it was great! I don't know that this in particular set him off or not, but the doctors did speculate that he'd picked up a stomach bug and it just went from there. I was afraid that I had picked up something when we lived in South America, like some sort of bacteria or parasite. We took precautions, like buying bottled water and such, but it was still one of the first things we thought of when they were asking questions. When we came home, I realized I was pregnant. I saved it so I could read it again later, and look up some of the terms Thanks again!
