Allopurinol

Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor traditionally used to treat high levels of uric acid, gout, and kidney stones. However, when someone on Azathioprine or 6-MP shows increasing levels of the metabolite 6-MMP and decreased levels of 6-TGN, Allopurinol can be added to reverse that. If Allopurinol is utilized, it is recommended that Azathioprine or 6-MP dosage is at least halved and blood levels are closely monitored.[1]

Side Effects

Skin rash, kidney problems, too great an increase in 6-TGN leading to leukopenia.
