Backwash Ileitis

Patients with very severe and extensive Inflammation of the Colon, or Pancolitis, may have inflammation in the last portion of the Ileum as well. This Ileal Involvement may be due to "Backwash Ileitis", or Inflammation due to Colonic Backwash (Reflux).

Sometimes an Inflammatory Bowel Disease diagnosis can be difficult in terms of distinguishing between Crohn's Disease vs. Ulcerative Colitis. Backwash Ileitis can sometimes lead to a Crohn's Disease misdiagnosis based on Ileal Involvement, when the disease should be diagnosed as Ulcerative Colitis instead.
