Fluoxetine

Fluoxetine is a specific serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Its primary usage is as an antidepressant. It may be used to treat any of the symptoms of depression such as low mood, fatigue and trouble sleeping.

Side effects

As with any other medication, fluoxetine can have various side effects. The majority are fairly minor, however there is a very low risk of liver problems. Also there is a risk of suicidal thoughts. This is more likely in younger patients, and those who have had suicidal thoughts before. You may want to confide in a close friend or family member, who can keep an eye on you.

Things to avoid

You should avoid the following things while taking fluoxetine:
  • Alcohol
  • MOAIs (another class of antidepressant)
  • Tramadol (a painkiller)
  • St John's Wort (a herbal remedy)

Fluoxetine is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
