Ileus

What is Ileus

Ileus is the inability of the Gastrointestinal Tract to effectively transport Intestinal Contents in the Absence of Blockage causing mechanical Intestinal Obstruction. Ileus may also be referred to as Intestinal Paralysis, Hypoperistalsis or Intestinal Dysmotility.

Ileus can be very painful and is most often due to surgery in the abdomen, especially Bowel Resection. Ileus can cause Abdominal Distention, Bloating and Excessive Gas. Nausea and Vomiting are also common. After surgical Resection oral ingestion of food is restricted until Ileus is resolved.

Causes of Ileus

Abdominal Surgery / Postoperative Ileus
Abdominal Trauma
Certain Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies (ex. Low Potassium)
Diabetes
[Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Intestinal Infection or Appendicitis
Ischemia
Kidney Disease
Lung Disease
Medications, particularly Anticholinergic and Narcotic types
Nerve Damage / Nerve Injury
Parkinson's Disease
Radiation Therapy / Radiation Enteritis
Scleroderma
