Intestinal Obstruction

Obstructions of the small intestine are unfortunately not uncommon in patients with Crohn's Disease. They can be caused by inflammation, fibrotic tissue (scarring), muscular hyperplasia, and adhesions. Obstructions are a medical emergency and prompt medical care should be sought.

Symptoms

Severe abdominal pain
Rumbling feeling/sounds (Borborygmus / Borborygmi)
Nausea
Vomiting

Treatment

Fasting
Corticosteroids for inflammation
Stomach suction
IV fluids
Balloon dilation of strictures
Surgery is obstruction persists
