Proctocolectomy

A Proctocolectomy is the surgical removal of the large intestine and the Rectum. The end of the intestine that is spared is attached to the outside of the body through a small incision made in the abdomen called a Ostomy.

The Anus is sewn closed because waste is now removed through the new opening in the abdomen. Waste is collected in an Ostomy bag which attaches to the Stoma.
