Small Bowel Follow Through (SBFT)

The Small Bowel Follow Though (SBFT) also known as the Small Bowel Series is a test where the patient swallows barium to outline and highlight the lining of the small intestine from the end of the duodenum to the ileocecal valve which marks the end of the small intestines and start of the large intestines. An x-ray is then taken approximately every 1/2 hour.

Small Bowel Follow Through Versus Other Tests

For detecting Crohn's Disease, one study found the following:

The Sensitivity and Specificity was as follows, respectively: CTE = 82%/89%; ileocolonoscopy = 83%/100%; capsule endoscopy = 74%/53%; and small bowel follow-through = 65%/94%[1]
