Lymphocytic Colitis

In December, I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis. (I thought it was CC, but I had a follow-up appt. with my G.I. Doc on 3/26 & he explained that it is LC)

For the 1st 6 weeks, I took 3, 3 mg. capsules of Budesonide.

I saw no improvement.

My G.I. Doc reduced the Budesonide to 2, 3 mg. capsules, and added 3, 1.2GM Lialda tablets.

I've been following Mayo Clinic's recommendation of low fat/low fiber diet, no dairy.

(I did learn that the casein in dairy is a definite trigger for me.)

At my follow-up appt. on 3/26, my G.I. Doc told me that it is going to take a very long time to put the LC into remission, because it went undiagnosed for so long.

I saw my MS Specialist on 2/27, she ordered the usual tests, and once again my Vit. D is low, so I am back on another 12 weeks of 50,000 IU D2, 1 day a week, and then, re-test.

Yesterday, her assistant called and added 5,000 mcg. Vit B12. And is sending me orders for more tests in 4 weeks.

I 'think' my Rebif injections might be contributing to my D. I discontinued the injections for 4 weeks, re-started them this past Monday, and after the 2nd injection on Wednesday eve. the D has worsened.

Does anyone else here have MS and use a DMD?

The Rebif is not worth it to me, if it is contributing to my D.

Hi Sydney! Great name, but I'm a little bit biased in saying that.

I don't have a while lot to add other than I have MC myself. Of late I've been able to enter into remission off and on through dietary changes. It's a work in progress, but it's nice to be feeling well a large portion of the time lately. I'm hoping in the weeks ahead I'll be able to tweak my diet further to be well most of the time.

Much as you I eat low fiber, and little dairy (I'll eat some aged cheese from time to time.). I've also found eating gluten/ grain free to be beneficial, which apparently is a common for some of us with MC to do.

If you have not already seen it, you might check out David's thread on how he gained remission.

Along similar lines, this is an older video that made the rounds awhile ago, and thought it might be helpful. It is a speech physician Terry Wahls made about how she was able to successfully treat her MS with diet and I believe vitamin D.

Hi, Beach.

Thank you. I'm very fond of the name "Sydney", myself.

Yes, thank you, yes, I've read David's thread on how he gained remission. I admit, I am impressed.

I will view Terry Wahls video on how she was able to treat her MS with diet and Vit. D. I have had enough of the injections! (My MS Specialist won't like hearing it at my follow-up appt. with her in June, but when you weigh 76#s, there's not a lot of fat for the injections.)

Thank you for the links.

It's nice to read that you have been able to enter into remission, on and off with dietary changes. I agree, it is definitely a work in progress.

It's been trial and error.

I see others were not able to answer your question unfortunately, so wanted to wish you luck! Hope you find relief, and gain some weight back! I have a family friend with MS. He's had a ruff go of it, but has mentioned that vitamin D has helped him a good deal.

I'm also a double condition person, not only with MC but with heart disease also, developed at an early age. With a little bit of luck I'll hopfully find complete remission with the MC in the near future. Then I can turn my attention to the heart disease condition completely. I figure my MC has played a key roll in why I developed plaque in the first place.

Hi, Beach.

It's ok, I posed the question in my MS Forum, and members told me to stick with my Rebif, until my Vit. D & B12 levels were back to normal.

Thank you. In all honesty, I thought the MS was bad until I developed LC.

I'm so sorry that you have heart disease. All of these diseases seem to go hand-in-hand.

1st, I developed hypothyroidism & Hashimoto's thyroid disease.

Then, along came MS.

And then, LC.

I hope we both find complete remission, and soon!

Hi Sydney,

Fantastic - glad you were able to obtain an answer for the Rebif!

Yeah, have to agree 100%, for having such a diminutive name, microscopic colitis sure packs a punch. Hang in there, and keep us posted on how everything is going. Hopfully we'll both find some relief from all our conditions soon.

Hi, Beach.

Thank you-I was glad to get advice regarding the Rebif, too.

I was very fortunate to get my diagnosis of LC. I've read so many stories of people being mis-diagnosed for years with IBS.

Although, when my G.I. Doc 1st diagnosed me, he expected to wean me off the Budesonide after the 1st 6 weeks.

You hang in there, too.

Things have got to improve, for both of us.
