Dan-
Two days before my wedding I had 7 leaks in one day! Needless to say my skin was raw and bloody making it even harder for a bag to stick. That night I had had it. When everyone went to bed, I got a cup ready (I’m sorry that this is so gross and graphic but this is what worked), and I took off my bag (it had started coming off again any way), I cleaned the area, and then I just sat in the tub with my stoma uncovered for about two hours and I let it soak. Whenever my stoma was active, I just used the cup and went back to soaking. After that I just cleaned up in the shower and put on a clean bag. My skin healed so much doing that that the bag actually stuck and I haven’t had a problem since. I know it sounds gross, but it was the only way I could heal the wound. It was my husband’s suggestion.
I haven’t had any problems since. In fact, I just went four days before changing my bag, which is the longest I have ever gone. Even then, no leak, just time to change it.
So here is the bag changing method that I use that finally worked for me. This method has both made the bags stay on longer, as well as improved the state of my skin, which in turn, makes the bags stay on longer.
First, I get set up. I cut the hole in the bag just a bit bigger than the stoma so the stoma has room to constrict and move. Then I put some paste around the edge of the seal and let it dry for a few minutes. While that is drying, I remove the bag. I clean the area with water only half of the time when I change it and baby shampoo the other half. If there is no poo on my skin, using only water is better. Next I make sure the area is very dry. Then I use a bit of stoma powder, wipe off the excess and set it with a stoma whip. I think that the powder and whip combo is what is helping the most.
Then I wait for that to dry and I carefully place the bag around my stoma. Then I make sure there is a good seal around my stoma and hold pressure on my stomach for a good ten minutes before I get dressed. If I skip any of these steps, I’m in trouble. After a lot of products and trial and error, that is what has worked for me getting my bags to stick, and I haven’t had any skin problems since I started doing it this way. My skin has finally been able to heal. Hope that helps!
