What are the effects of 6MP

I'm new to the forum with a lot of questions. I have been taking my son to a gastro. Dr. since he was baby, he is now 11 and diagnosed with Crohn's. He was taking asacol with no relief so he started him on Pentasa, prilosec, and zantac. He is still having episodes so he is talking about 6MP. is there anyone familier with the drug?

Most if not all of the kids on this board have been on 6-mp /Aza at one time or another.
6-mp just needs to have bloodwork monitoring closely at first then later monthly then every three months.
This helps determine if its working and if its going to the liver.
Its a simple pill to be taken once a day typically at bed.
Easiest med DS ever took.
Unfortunately for him - it keep going to his liver every time the dose would be high enough to be effective .
We tried lowering the dose and adding allopurinol but the same thing happened.
In the end it was not enough for DS .

It does take 4-6 months to become effective.

Good luck

Hi, sorry your son is struggling with his Crohn's. We are on our second week of 6-mp without any problems. We are tapering off the prednisone and can't wait because those symptoms are getting severe. My son has a weekly blood test.

It is a scary drug on paper, but so far it is easy, 1 pill in the morning.
Mom to: 15 year old boy
Crohn's in stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and perianal disease
Diagnosed April 2014, at age 13

Currently taking:
Remicade 10mg/kg every 6 wks
Methotrexate 7.5 mg/wk

previous meds:
6mp 50mg
Prednisone 30 mg

That's what my son is taking. He's been on it for a year now with no side effects apart from some tiredness. Good luck, hope it works for your son

My son was not as fortunate as some others with Imuran, the sister drug of 6mp. He had an almost immediate reaction to it-elevated liver enzymes and nightly fevers of 105 F. It would have been easier than the MTX shots he is on now, but I am thankful that the MTX is doing what it is supposed to. I hope you have good luck with the 6mp.

My son was on Imuran along with allipurinol since we had troubles getting to a theraputic level for a few years with no issues, we just could not get to 100% on it and he still had mild simmering inflammation. My husband has been on it for about 13 years so far and in remission.
We started with bedtime dosage as nausea could be a side effect and this would allow him to sleep through that but when we moved dose to breakfast a few months later we did not have any issues.
We did start out with weekly bloods, then bi-weekly, then monthly and then every 3 months
Good luck

My dd has been on sister drug aza for 2 and half years. She is in a stable remission on 150mg per day.

She doesn't appear to have any side effects.

She does bruise easily. (Maybe a side effect)

My two are on Imuran. My daughter has been taking it for 8 years and my son 3.5 years.

They have bloods done every 2-3 months and neither has had any side effects.

Same here. My daughter has been on 6MP with no real side effects. I think it has been helpful too.
