New to Forum

Hi! I am full-time Mum to 3 & half year old daughter. Got 1st symptoms of Crohn's 3 months after having her. Diagnosed 8 months later. Went on Salofalk. Fine. Then got the arthritis. Went on Salazopyrin. Fine. After 2 years arthritis specialist wanted me to get Liver Function Test-was abnormal & getting worse. After going off both drugs finally went back to normal by May 2011. Needless to say not going back to that particular Gastroenterologist who didn't get me to do regular blood tests even after I & gp questioned the safety of 2 sulfur drugs. On no drugs since Jan 2011. Got mild symptoms of Crohn's back about 10 days ago. Am now starting the Specific Carb Diet on advice from new Gp with an interest in nutrition/diet & alternative medicine. Want to try to stay off drugs etc. Trying now to work out what can buy/eat/cook. Ordered 2 books off internet & signed up to the Official Specific Carb Diet-Elaine Gottschal & the other My Crohn's Diet (?). Will see how it goes! When get time will read all your threads regarding this diet. Thanx. Rebeka.

ps. just noticed this site is in USA-I'm in Australia, Victoria, Rosebud West!!!!! Hope this is ok!

Yikes! I hope so, just look left!... Nah seriously, all corners of the world are welcome!

Holy cow, that goodness you ditched that GI! Do you have another gastroeneterologist?

Have a browse through the diet forum located here and you should find lots of info and any questions you have just fire away.

I hope the diet settles things down for you but if not you'll find plenty of advice and experience about the meds too.

Good luck and welcome aboard!

Hi Rebekah
Good to meet you, glad you found us. Interesting, that's the first time I've heard of a GP recommending SCD. I saw a dietician yesterday and she said she wouldn't, but then she didn't know what it is really or much about Crohn's for that matter.
I've been on it for about 4 months now. I fell off the diet wagon for a few days for various
reasons, but had such an increase in my symptoms I quickly got back on it.

Welcome to the forum! I am sorry you are starting to show symptoms of active Crohn's again. I sure hope the SC Diet works for you. But be sure to stay in close contact with a GI to monitor your progress and in case you decide you may need medicine once again. Good luck!

thanx heaps

Thanx for your replies and support. Yep-my new GP is also into diet, nutrition and natural medicine. Has organised for me to see a new Gastroenterologist with "an open mind". Was in bed 3 days (ready to use prednisolone to stop the inflammation!), but turned the corner this morn. My zinc & Vit D way too low too, so got a Vit D shot in the thigh today! I also had to order the book on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet: "Breaking the Vicious Cycle-intestinal health through diet" by Elaine Gottschall from Amazon in the US-can't get it in Australia!!!!! On Slippery Elm too, also now fish oil & couple of other vits. We can only see how we go, would prefer not to go back onto meds tho! I will check out the rest of your site when get time (& energy!)

Thanx heap, my international Crohn's family,

Hiya Rebeka
and welcome

Glad you found us, hope you find comfort here with us! We're from all over the World.
Good luck with your diet, lots of peeps on here have tried it.
I haven't tho, in my opinion and from my own personal experience, diet won't stop inflammation when it strikes. It can certainly reduce symptoms such as diarrhea tho.
Just keep your eye on it,
lotsa luv
