Humira + Methotrexate Combo - Surgery ??

Quick questions:
-how long prior to surgery have you been requested to stop your Humira and methotrexate.

-How long after surgery were you allowed to start taking the medication again? Did you have any reaction from the fact you stopped it?

- Did your specialist (GI or Surgeon) mentioned to keep taking it continuously despite the surgery?

- If you never stopped your medication, how was the healing process? Speedy or are you under the impression it should have healed faster?

Any thoughts are welcome, I'm eager to read what you have to share.

Hi Jane. Don't know about humira, only about to start it in a few weeks, but before my resection, and the illeostomy reversal, I had to wean pred, and stop imune sup, but begin imuran while in hospital. Last time I was supposed to have a recsection( cancelled last minute on a candida diet), I stopped infliximab, and had to wean pred. But my GI wasn't going to put me back on infliximab straight after surgery, as at the time it seemed it wasn't working. Sorry I can't be much help with humira, iv just been reading any post I see on it. If you do need surgery, hope all goes well!!! Best wishes xo

Thanks Irene, and yes I do need surgery... I'm just concerned as my GI and Surgeon gave me different directives for my treatment and, from what I read and know, ... It seems scary to stay on the medication and undergo surgery...

I feel the same way when it comes to trying to heal, it's hard to except that the 'best' thing, is to stay on imunesuppresants. I guess if its left up to you to decide, you could always stop temporarily, and in a month or two, begin the humira again. If you have that option. Best of luck with whatever you decide. Keep us posted on how it all goes :)

I'm awaiting a resection or strictureplasty & my Specialist has told me I can stay on fortnightly Humira right the way through.

Hi Jane! I wasn't on Humira but Cimzia before my surgery (which is very similar). I took it as normal before the surgery, but was told to stop by my surgeon after the surgery, as well as Pentesa, until I had a follow up with my GI. I had a follow up with my GI 2 weeks post-op. I don't believe he thought the meds I was on were working properly since I got two fistulas while on them (I was seeing a different GI before all of this). I am going to be starting a different 5 ASA (Apriso) as soon as it arrives from my mail order pharmacy; should be tomorrow. Since I have had CD in my colon in the past, he wanted to put me back on maintenance meds to hopefully prevent the inflammation from returning anytime soon.

Hopefully you can sort out the discrepancy between your surgeon and GI soon. Good luck!

It's reassuring to see that no one as mentioned major issues while staying on the medication. I just miss someone sharing something about methotrexate and surgery and ill be ok with the fact of continuing them. Darn anxiety when you hold me... ! If that may get me a few years of remission, it worth going through that whole deal again!
