Anal abscess help me!

Hello im 26 years old im so confused i have had an anal abscess that was never treated properly and for 6 years i have had so much drainage of puss from my anus. iv had multiple surgerys for ficals but i dont think they were done properly. I have no abdominal pain or bleeding really no pain at all other then just this annoying gross stinky puss that has been draining for 6 years. 4 years ago i had a colonoscpy and the biopsy came back negative now i just had a setin in and removed and closed up and a biopsy done and now it has come back as colotis. My doctor put me on metronidazole and cipro and the next day i had wonderful results no more puss at all no more drainage AT ALL ! what does this mean ? how can i have crohns is i dont have any typical symtoms and all i have is this fical and abscess ( or did have) is there any way a biospy can be WRONG ? seeing that my prior one came back as ok ? someone please put my mind at ease or just give me some advice ? im so lost and it takes forever to see a doctor ! i need help i cant sleep im only 26 and i have a 2 year old im so sad i dont want to have crohns im hanging on to hope im praying ! thanks so much !

Are you still on those meds? I took Cipro and Flagyl and it worked really well for my abscess but once I came off, the drainage came right back. I've dealt with abscesses for years now as well and had two surgeries late 2011. I currently have a big abscess draining because of the surgery and another one that is draining on its own. I've never had a seton though. I'm a 22 y/o male and have to wear female pads in my underwear because it drains so much and would drain right through my clothes if I didn't. It sucks but I'd rather that than have a big wet spot on the back of my jeans.

Like you, my abscess is really my only main symptom for crohns as well. With crohns, everybody is so individual that we all have completely different symptoms. I would definitely get a second opinion though if you think there may be a problem with your results.

Also, I think when you say "fical" you might be referring to a fistula?

Hey thank you so much for responding yes pardon my spelling ! So u have no other symptoms other then the abscess ? So it possible to have Crohn's and have no other pain other then the horrid abscess ? I also have to wear a pad all the time or it would leak right thru. What other meds do they put u on to get back to being normal ? Or is this jut something that I have to live with ? The seton did not help I would say it got 10 times worse only after the seton was removed and I took these meds are te first time in 6 years Iv been NORMAL. I'm hoping the biospy was wrong and a coloscopy will show I don't have Crohn's but if u are saying u have the same situation and u have Crohn's have the other meds u have taken helped rid of the abscess ? Thanks !

Hi there and welcome to the community. I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through

Was any information given besides the biopsy showing, "colitis"? I ask because you can have colitis but it not be inflammatory bowel disease. Or of course colitis could mean you have a form of IBD. We need more information on exactly what the biopsy report said.

My only other symptom is diarrhea but I can take stuff for that and that goes away. I don't get any pain or set backs from crohns though so my major problem is the abscesses. There's a lot of conflicting information as to what's best for abscesses. Some say biologics like Remicade and Humira and one of the only things to work while others (and this makes sense) say that Remicade and Humira cause the abscess to heal over too quickly where as we want drainage so the infection comes out.

Like I said with the Cipro and Flagyl though, and I think metro medicine you said was a medical name for Flagyl (I could be wrong) but they did really work *while* I was on them. My thinking is that if somebody were to be on them for a longer period of time it could really help.

My abscesses are basically now going "untreated" because they're only draining and don't cause me problems so really there's nothing that needs to be done. My surgeon keeps updates but says as long as things are going the way they are than there's no need for anything else, and I'm happy with that.

So thankful to have people like u writing to me giving me hope ! I don't know what to ask for on the biospy report. ? I feel like I don't understand what to ask cause I don't understand all the options of what this could be. Thing is I have no pain .. So I'm waiting to see a new specalist but in Canada it takes so long to see a specalist! I want answers! To make my Christmas I guess just to think I don't have Crohn's would make me the most grateful person ! Uv given me hope David thanks !

Hi dealing26... I just wanted to say hello and welcome you to the forum. You asked if it is possible to have only anal abscesses a a symptom of Crohns. While unusual perhaps, I would guess that the answer is yes. Crohns can appear anywhere in the GI system, and the anus counts!
I am sorry that you have to wait so long to see a specialist. I hope that you are able to get answers soon. You can ask for copies of the pathology report from the biopsies and perhaps we can help you to understand better.

Feel better!

Remicade and Humira used to keep mine in check but it seems fixing my diet of food I don't tolerate has done more than either of the medications did.

That said I used to get them if I was a 5+ days late on my dose, and nothing would make them go away, mine would never come to head or drain, the biggest one got was roughly the size of a coaster, the doctors were amazed I didn't come in sooner, but y'know embarrassing issues can lead to bad decisions.

You could try seeking some natural anti-inflammatory products like Turmeric which you can get in capsules or buy in bulk in a grocery store spice isle, there's no side effects but they may cause constipation so if they do just follow standard procedure, drink plenty of water etc. Also I understand that it's absorbed best with black pepper but I cannot tolerate pepper so I can't say. It's supposed to work wonders as a detox and fighting fistulas and cysts. Some also say it can be applied topically in a salve but I'm not sure what you'd mix it with to make it pasty, and it stains the skin yellow.
