Weight gain and crohns

HI, I am now 45 an i was diagnosed with crohns when I was 15 after suffering 2 years of symptoms , I was sent an admission letter to attend an anorexic unit in a Near by town , as the dr in local hospital decided ( weight loss, vomiting and being hairy a family thing , I may add ,) that I was an anorexic
MY mum would not allow me to go , I was then refured to another blood specialist who on examination kept me in chapel Allerallerton hospital Leeds for two weeks in the only bed available ( on a geriatric ward) I was then diagnosed with crohns one of he youngest in Leeds at hat time.
After many resections and surgery I ended up with a permanent illiostomy
I am well now and have been for many years but suffer with weight gain even though my bowel is very short I am always hungry I eat healthy but if I miss or reduce food my illiostomy goes crazy noise wise ! Any ideas would be gratefull .

Hello Joey and welcome to the forum :)

I have seen others here who do have an issue with weight gain rather than weight loss, it can be down to malabsorbtion because what bowel you have is not absorbing what it needs from your food so it keeps telling your brain that it needs you to eat more, that's the way I understand it anyway. Have you spoken to your doc about this at all and if so what did they have to say? Do they ever do any checks on your vitamin levels? We do also have a stoma sub forum that is worth checking out as the folks here might also have some suggestions: http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=46. Also are you on any meds for your crohn's now and if so what do you take?

The same thing happened to me. Doctors saw a teenage girl, underweight, and decided to treat me for anorexia. It really undermined my trust in people, not having anyone believe me really messed me up emotionally.

I'm still really underweight. But I have no appetite. If you're appetite is fine and you're eating enough, it probably is the case that you're not absorbing everything you eat, which is probably something to talk to a doctor about. On the other hand, maybe you're not eating as much as you think? Especially if you're eating healthy. Maybe try keeping a food diary or having your diet assessed by a dietician?

Hi there and welcome to the community :)

Just to confirm, you are now having trouble because you are putting on too much weight? Or you're not able to put on weight?

Thanks :)
