How can I ease the pain of my healing incision/scar?

I had surgery on the 11th of December, and have a 4.5 inch scar (belly button to pubic line). I am beginning to be more active, and the skin and tissue around the scar is getting quite tender. The surgical nurse says that time and taking it easy is the best thing to do for this. I am curious how others with big scars have managed the pain and promoted healing WITH full function- I would hate to be a slave to this for an extended amount of time. Thanks for your help.

I used an analgesic antibacterial/antiseptic cream - Savlon or Germolene - then Bio-Oil, now it's white and hardly noticeable
