Ileum inflammation: crohns? or could it be something else?

I have posted here mostly about my son- who this year at age 6 was diagnosed with colitis and likely crohns disease. My grandmother had crohns disease and there are lots of autoimmune issues in my family. I have had stomach issues (thought to be IBS) for at least 20 years. Recently more nausea and urgency with bowel movements so gi sent me for a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy.

The scope revealed mild inflammation in stomach and "last section of small bowel." I am waiting now on biopsy results from those sites. In the past they have found gastritis, duodenitis, and on CT mesenteric adenitis. I am gluten free because I feel better on it no celiac results are positive. Is it likely that the ileum involvement now may lead to a crohns investigation? My GI kind of thought that was highly unlikely because I hadn't lost a lot of weight when I asked her about soon after my son was diagnosed in January.

Inflammation in the TI certainly could be Crohn's, especially given your strong family history. IBS doesn't cause inflammation, so don't let them brush you off with that any more. Not everyone with Crohn's loses weight - some do, some don't, a few even seem to gain weight even in flares! Everyone with Crohn's is a little different, so again, don't let them brush you off just because you haven't lost a lot of weight. (If I may ask, how much have you lost? My GI gets concerned if I lose even a small amount like 5 lbs.)

Good luck with your biopsy results. I hope it's not Crohn's, but I also hope you can get a reasonable explanation for why you've had these symptoms and inflammation! Please keep us posted on how everything goes and what you find out - good luck!
