Hello

Hi, My name is wayne I was diagnosed with crohns in 2008 and have tried various drugs but all pretty ineffective. Approx 2 weeks ago i was put on azathioprine, the first week all seemed okay no side effects, but the second week i started to get pains in the upper abdominal area almost straight away after eating, i put up with this for 3 days then i went to my GP who said it was indigestion?,but to be safe sent me hospital anyway but the hospital confirmed his diagnosis?told me to take remies and paracetamol?,so I continued to take azathioprine for 2 more days on the 5th day after eating my tongue had swollen, I had severe pains in my higher abdomen and my arms and hands all tingling, I was on the verge of passing out twice, I have stopped taking the drug for 2 days now and am feeling better every day the pains after eating have gone just still feeling sort of hung over, has anyone else experienced this on these drugs?,thanks, wayne.

Hi and welcome. I'm on azathioprine but never experienced those effects. Have you talked to your GI specialist?

Hi,thanks for the reply, I cant get to speak to anyone until monday, even then its hard to actually get to talk to my consultant, Feeling so much better today though so am 100% certain it was the aza that was causing the problems.

Hi Wayne
I did experience similar symptoms and was immediately taken off the azathioprine.
The specialist said they were allergy symptoms to the aza.
Your symptoms sound suspiciously similar. You should be tested for pancreatitis.... among other tests.
Don't take any more and make sure to discuss all symptoms with your gI specialist.
Good luck tomorrow. Please let us know how you get on.
Feel better soon
Hugs and best wishes

Been to doctors today and been signed off work for a bit to get back to normal, still havent been able to get to speak with my consultant but he left a message with his secretary to say that it was a definate reaction to the azathioprine to stop taking it and that he will review my notes and be in touch?...l'll just have to wait and see what happens. thanks to all that replied, wayne.
