Prednisone in First Trimester

Hello,

After 18 month of TTC, I am finally 4 weeks pregnant. My Crohn's seems to be under control with Entyvio, but the joint pain is unbearable. I am trying to get by using Voltaren gel but I think I'll have to take low dose (5 mg) prednisone so I can get out of bed and to work.

Anyone run into issues with prednisone in the first trimester? I know the oral cleft palate risk is during the first trimester, so I wish I could make it to 12 weeks without it

Hi there,

Such a low dose of Prednisone doesn't harm the baby. In fact many women with immun issues can't keep there pregnancies without Cortisone in the first 12 weeks. Nevertheless it should be reduced and stopped around week 12. i also took prednisone Till week 12 and started reducing from positive heartbeat. There is also a very good book of a one of the best immunologists Dr. Alan
Beer with the title "is your body babyfriendly". There he says that women with ibd need aggressive immun Treatments e.g. Humira, Predni..etc..often to Even get pregnant.

All the best

Hello, yes it was helpful. I'm just concerned about the risk of cleft palate and lip during first trimester. Specifically, what dose I should try to stay under. I have Rheumatoid arthritis and crohns and have been taking 10 mg of prednisone and 10 mg of hydrocortisone each day. It's the absolute least I can take to walk.

What does your doc say about that? There is quite a lot of research out there about predni and pregnancy...

They don't have much reassurance. Just that they feel I need it.
