Looking for diet help please

HI, erm feeling a little bit of a fraud now after reading other peoples stories.
Anyway I'll explain. back in about 2009 i had a sudden urge to got to the toilet(no.2) and almost didn't make it. I put it down to something I ate and forgot about it, but almost everyday since then i have needed to rush to the toilet and have to go 3 or 4 times, varying from very loose to almost water. I went to see my doctor and he put it down to IBS and said 'nothing to worry about'. I did some research which said i should make sure everything else is ruled out first. So back to see the doc. Had a camera up the wazzoo, blood test which shows a high white blood count, but it's been quite high all my life. The diagnosed was diverticulitis and ileitis. An hour in a MRI scanner, that was fun, and finally saw the consultant who then said it was Crohn's. I told him my main problem was with tomatoes, weird I know, so then he prescribes me tablets called Pentasa. He said it would help to ease my bad stomach pains, which i already told him I didn't get. Anyway went home took the tablets then after a few days i started getting pains, for 72 hours i was back to the toilet every couple of hours even through the night. I was in agony and had nothing left to pass but was still going through the motions. I stopped taking them and with another 48 hours if had settled down. I checked the ingredients on the instructions and found they belong to a group called salicylates, and tomatoes have this big time, so he hadn't even listened to me.
But my good news is just after my camera I found turmeric, made some and started taking it, i did also try and tell the consultant this but he seemed in a hurry that day. I have taken pain killers for years for arthritis and when the turmeric started to work i haven't taken any since. I had a blood test in October 2015 then in December, my white count was 23 then 25. then i had a test in march of this year, after the turmeric was doing it's stuff and my count was down to 18, the lowest it's ever been.

So I guess I'm asking if anyone else has had anything like me. I'm looking for some 'safe' foods. I don't have a problem with dairy or gluten but tomatoes are a big no no. had baked beans the other night without thinking and boy did i need the loo.
anyway thanks for letting me join and listening to my rather boring story

Welcome. I am sorry for what you have been through. Have you tried keeping a food diary to see what foods aggravate your system? I don't eat anything with tomatoes either. I have heard that tumeric can have benefit for those with IBD but everyone is different. Are you on any medication right now for the Crohns? There could be damage going on inside of your body that you are not aware if. Wish you the best.

not taking any meds right now. the doctor wanted to give me steroids but i won't take those. Medication is what started this problem so the least meds i take the better. Turmeric has done me a world of good. i'm going for another blood test soon, and if my white count is down again I will be very happy. I'm am needing the toilet less and less now so fingers crossed with a good diet i can have a normal life

I am glad you are being monitored by the doctor. There is a section on here. I thinking it is called Diet, Nutrition and Supplements. There are different diets some people follow such as the SCD diet and I think other diets. You should check the section out.

If salicylates are a problem for you then you not only want to avoid Pentasa but also aspirin. Plus many fruits and some vegetables, beyond just tomatoes, contain salicylates as well.

Hi and welcome. Im hoping you continue to improuve with tumeric and other food approach. You can check out IBD-aid diet in my signature. keep close monitoring with your doctor and make sure by any means your ileitis is under control (remission) as soon as possible. White blood test and general impression of feeling better are not enough to assess remission. When you feel better, it is still important to have proper testing to make sure you dont have remaining minor, simmering inflammation. Unfortunately untreated crohn's can end up in further complications and surgery. Often, medication is really necessary, eventhough we all hate to take it :(
I know any food with grains inside such as tomatoes, raisins, etc are bad for diverticulitis. wishing you well.

Thanks for that, and yes I have always had a problem with aspirin causing tummy pains. I used to take ibuprofen by the bucket(well maybe not that many) for arthritis but now i don't even take pills for head aches

Best of luck in finding a safe diet. Tomatoes are also on my concern list. I'm not entirely sure if tomatoes are a problem, or if it is one of the spices typically added to tomatoes. Regardless, I've learned my lesson. Some of the worst stomach attacks I've experienced occurred after eating spaghetti with hamburger. The pain level was off the chart, lasting for a day.

For diet ideas you might take a look at the diet section here on the sight. it can be viewed scrolling down on the main page.

Another IBD diet sight I enjoy is Persky's farms. It's a sight dedicated toward dietary ideas to address colitis and other IBDs. As a warning it is an anti-gluten sight. I thought to mention though as you might pick up some additional dietary ideas that could help, with the stomach and arthritis issues.

the sight can be seen here:

Best of luck.

One of my doctors told me to avoid marinara sauce.

Ron,

I believe the unofficial ruling in the town I live in is that wine should be added to everything. I suspect your doctor wouldn't last long in this town!:p

thanks for all the ideas and help, i have now seen a diet specialist and got some good ideas from here too. i'm keeping a food diary and am now down to see the top consultant about this instead of the last doctor whom didn't listen, i'm sure he is more than qualified but i feel he just wasn't interested in me

Tomatoes have always bothered me as well. Pasta sauce, salsa etc. I love salsa though! I am starting to keep a food diary as well. Also too much-fried food seems to bug me a bit too. Stuff that just gets drenched in the oil and soaks it up seems to bother me.
