Butyrate is a type of short-chain fatty acid fermented by bacteria in the colon. It appears to be the preferred SCFA for maintaining the health of colonocytes.[1]

One study found that increasing butyrate through diet was helpful in patients with Ulcerative Colitis [2] as another study found that impaired oxidation of butyrate may play a role in Ulcerative Colitis.[3]

In patients with Crohn's Disease with NOD2 / CARD15 Gene mutation causing impaired NOD2 function. Butyrate (possibly in combination with Vitamin D) may upregulate NOD2.[4]
